Description
Way back in 1986, before craft brewing was even cool, Summit Brewing Company Founder and President Mark Stutrud set out in St. Paul, Minnesota, to make craft beers inspired by old-world brewing traditions and ingredients. More than 30 years have passed since he first brewed our flagship Summit Extra Pale Ale, and it’s safe to say he freaking nailed it.

Today, Summit Brewing continues to infuse traditional recipes with modern ingredients from around the world, crafting high-quality and consistent craft beer out of respect for the hardworking folks who enjoy our beer.

And because we’re independently owned and operated, we get to make craft beer our way. That means relying on natural carbonation, protecting the foam, and celebrating the true dance between malts, hops, water, and yeast. It means protecting the environment, supporting the community and the arts, being kind to animals, and always having one more beer with our friends and family even if we’re already late for rotary club. It means drinking our beer fresh and cold, because warm storage turns good beer to shit. And it means never settling for “good enough,” always pulling the goalie when we’ve got a chance to win, swinging for the fences, and never, ever forgetting where we come from. Grain country represent.

12oz bottle. Aroma is grains, touch of grass, light hop notes. Flavor is grain, herbal notes, touch of floral notes. Drinkable, not offensive as a lager.

12oz bottle. Aroma was light, sweet malt notes. Enjoyable sweet notes, malts, mild slightly earthy hops. Slightly bitter, sweet notes. Highly drinkable on a hot day, but nothing to call home about. Worth getting in a variety pack.

12oz bottle. Poured a light golden copper color. Aroma is floral and earthy hops, light biscuit malts. Flavor is earthy, slightly floral hops and malts. Decent, solid brewed American Pale Ale. Nothing to call home about. Probably a good gateway brew.

Cask gravity at Gbbf 2011. Hazy russet colour with lasting bubbly off white head. Fruity choccy ipa. Its got a bit of a herby edge. Its ok on the bitterness but really quite herby hop. Uk hop version at 6.2%. Ok but just not quite my thing. Very herby.

Bottle from a trade with CLevar. Pours dark brown/black with brown head. Aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, graham cracker and roasted malts. Bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt flavors with pumpkin pie spices. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. The roasted malt flavor adds a dimetion that makes this more enjoyable than typical pumpkin beers. Thanks Caleb.

Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL as part of a 12 pack sampler, enjoyed after the last horrid Friday commute I’ll have for a while! Appearance is a very cloudy golden amber with a very frothy white head. Aroma of bready/toasted malt with earthy hop profile and a bit of spices, richer than other APA’s I’ve smelled and more robust. Taste is interesting, it’s good as it’s got a nice earthy/floral hop profile mixed with toasted malt, but it’s somewhat light when compared to other beers in the style with a slight touch of sweetness. It’s more hoppy than malty, but I’d say in a 60/40 kind of way. This would make a great ’session’ ale, I’d definitely recommend it and think it’s the bees knees.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with a nice, big head, which begins to fall in on itself right away. Can’t pick up much smell in my current state. Taste: Good use of American hops. The malt is well-roasted and caramelly. Some slightly sharp bitter hops, then behind that is some piny Cascade-like hops. More pine further down. Very tasty Summit beer.

Enjoyed on tap at Bottom Lounge in Chicago, IL while watching the band Most Precious Blood. This one really was like a chocolate pumpkin pie. Appearance very dark with creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, bit of cocoa, faint amount of pumpkin. Taste nice and creamy, not really thick, just creamy with notes of chocolate, lactose, a bit of pumpkin but not much, pretty delicious. It really is decadent and a fantastic desert brew.

Draft at Dexters. Filtered golden-tan. Thin, lacy white head. Herbal laced Belgian Golden Ale aroma, shows some strength and depth. Some chamomile, sage type flavors, with a thick golden malt backbone. Rather respectably true to style, with some herbal herbal richness. Peppery, doughy, yeasty. Pretty well executed.

tap pours hazy gold with a medium white head. Aroma and flavor are strong yeast esters of banana and spice with grassy grains.
