Description
Way back in 1986, before craft brewing was even cool, Summit Brewing Company Founder and President Mark Stutrud set out in St. Paul, Minnesota, to make craft beers inspired by old-world brewing traditions and ingredients. More than 30 years have passed since he first brewed our flagship Summit Extra Pale Ale, and it’s safe to say he freaking nailed it.

Today, Summit Brewing continues to infuse traditional recipes with modern ingredients from around the world, crafting high-quality and consistent craft beer out of respect for the hardworking folks who enjoy our beer.

And because we’re independently owned and operated, we get to make craft beer our way. That means relying on natural carbonation, protecting the foam, and celebrating the true dance between malts, hops, water, and yeast. It means protecting the environment, supporting the community and the arts, being kind to animals, and always having one more beer with our friends and family even if we’re already late for rotary club. It means drinking our beer fresh and cold, because warm storage turns good beer to shit. And it means never settling for “good enough,” always pulling the goalie when we’ve got a chance to win, swinging for the fences, and never, ever forgetting where we come from. Grain country represent.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a pale yellow color with a very large yellow-white head. The aroma is sour and tangy malts with light floral hops. The flavor is light malts with a light yeasty undertone and a hint of floral hops. Fairly forgettable.

Bottle. Pour is brown, even a touch of reddness. Full porter taste, dark chocolate and roast coffee. Nice full hop taste at the end. Another nice Summit beer.

Draft and bottle. Copper pour with a small off-white head. Floral aroma with hints of caramel. The bottled version was much sweeter than the draft — perhaps because of age. The hops were much more subdued in the bottle as well. Both draft and bottle were fairly standard renditions of an APA. Nothing to make you sit up and take notice. OK hop bite atop the sweet backbone. Medium body and watery texture. Enjoyable for a session beer.

Thanks to OhioDad for this one. Opens with a lackluster pft. A thin head is roused briefly then quickly falls to a soapy ring of white. Hazy amber body. Very little aroma, although some malt and hops are detected. Lightly bitter with some dryness in the finish. Lacks balance and complexity. Well below average.

Bottled and labeled as their 20th anniversary beer from this brewery terrified of taking a risk or experimenting with their beers. Its a good enough bitter. Light amber color. Malt and lemon grass aroma. Thin head. Flavor has lightly sweet malt and fresh bread. Thin palate.

20th Anniversary Limited Edition. Dark brownish/copper with a minimal head. Aromas are of charcoal/wood and toffee. Minimal head. Flavor starts really nice (like a two milisecond burst) and then heads downhill as the toffee-like pleasantness gives way to an acrid and undescribable funk that is just not for me.

Good aroma with coriander, citrus, and surprisingly butter. A very smooth and easy to drink beer, particularly compared to the heavily hopped Surly beer that preceeded it. Sweet wheaty flavor, and a little sour in the finish. Draught poor at the Blue Nile. Sadly, this looks filtered as there is no sediment to be seen. Still, good job with this and way to go for trying something different.

Bottled. Clear orange colour, small off-white head. Aroma is fruity and hoppy. Flavour is fruity, hoppy and a bit roasted? and grassy. Smooth brew which at the same time is very refreshing. As the desription says, this beer will most likely not offend anyone.
