Description
Way back in 1986, before craft brewing was even cool, Summit Brewing Company Founder and President Mark Stutrud set out in St. Paul, Minnesota, to make craft beers inspired by old-world brewing traditions and ingredients. More than 30 years have passed since he first brewed our flagship Summit Extra Pale Ale, and it’s safe to say he freaking nailed it.

Today, Summit Brewing continues to infuse traditional recipes with modern ingredients from around the world, crafting high-quality and consistent craft beer out of respect for the hardworking folks who enjoy our beer.

And because we’re independently owned and operated, we get to make craft beer our way. That means relying on natural carbonation, protecting the foam, and celebrating the true dance between malts, hops, water, and yeast. It means protecting the environment, supporting the community and the arts, being kind to animals, and always having one more beer with our friends and family even if we’re already late for rotary club. It means drinking our beer fresh and cold, because warm storage turns good beer to shit. And it means never settling for “good enough,” always pulling the goalie when we’ve got a chance to win, swinging for the fences, and never, ever forgetting where we come from. Grain country represent.

Bottled
Dark semi- hazy orange/copper brown, good off-white head. Flowery hoppy (Cascade?) nose with some ryeish malt notes. Medium-bodied. Starts with some sugary sweetness, then crunchy hops. Aftertaste is more on sweet side than bitter. Easy to drink APA, nothing really outstanding, but drinkable "summer drink".

Original rating, 3/21/06. Bottle, "Enjoy by Mar 10." All right. I’m looking for that reliable, everyday, easy-to-find great pilsner beer to keep on hand to introduce others to the better beer world. Is this it? Well, it slipped a bit past its prime, but let’s see: Opens with a nice German hoppy smell that coiuld be close to skunk, still pleasant. In a Bitburger pils glass, I get an appealing gold body, few bubbles, and a stiff white head. Nose in the glass gets an occasional whiff of lipstick, but I can’t pin it down (no, my wife doesn’t drink out of my beer glasses). Taste is lightly toasted malts like an English muffin. Those hops the BMC folks forgot to use are here, leaving a bitter curdle at the throat. Hearty yet refreshing. Packaged light lagers are always problematic, but this one makes a very good at being as good a pilsner as I’ve found.
New 12 oz. bottle, 5/30/06: This bottle is dated "Enjoy by Feb 24," This bottle is either older or very fresh, but it came home in a hot car trunk. However, most of the off tastes I described before are missing, leaving a more refined brew, but a tad less mouthfeel. I think I can stand by this original rating.

This is the first beer I have had from this company. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy pale golden color with a large white head. The aroma is sour wheat and banana. The flavor is dry wheat and light malts with moderate banana and a hint of fruity hops. The finish is dry. Nothing special.

Pours a clear dark amber color with a medium thick beige/orange head that has pretty good retention. Minimal lacing except toward the bottom of the glass. Aroma of citrusy hops and pine. Medium-bodied with a nice hoppy and nutty flavor, with a decent malt foundation. The finish is hoppy and lasting, with a bitter aftertaste. This beer is not trying to blow anyone’s mind but it is a good example of a well-made entry of the style.

On tap at Lazy Chameleon in Powell, OH. Clear dark reddish brown with a thin beige head and decent lacing. Nutmeg and malt aroma. Medium-bodied with sweet malt and caramel flavors, and some spices as well. Pretty tasty but the flavor is very short-lived. The finish is roasted malt with a bitter follow-through. Above average, however nothing really makes this beer stand out in the sea of similar winter ales.

Medium citric hop aroma with a touch of biscuits. Mild floral and citric hop flavors integrate seamlessly into a biscuity sweet malt palate, light bitter finish. A Britishy IPA for sure. Amber color, a touch of red, med head but excellent lacing.

Standard american style oktoberfest, featuring mostly crystal malt. Curious citrus aroma, but not seemimingly from hops, but perhaps of fermentation. Lemon and orange. Muddled amber color, smallish head. Clean caramelized flavor, somewhat earthy and leafy with the hops, small rising bitterness in the finish.

Slightly yellowish golden pilsener, well carbonated to fluffy white, consistent head. Initially very grassy nose, pale malts, warm-sweetish aromas. Dry, very metallic/walnut - bitter pils. Bitterness completely obfuscates the restsweetness of the malt, and becomes more and more clearly hoppy with time. Some fruitiness in the back, as from fresh figs. Nice hoppy finish going over in long bitterish aftertaste, less sharp than in the beginning. Not bad, but I haven’t had a single pils in Czechia sporting such sharp bitterness. Overshooting its (obvious) target, but not without merits. Thanks, David.

The only amber quality is the name. There is a light hop aroma, and a medium body American pale ale taste of mildly bitter hops. A ok beer. I am disappointed they didn’t try something more interesting for their special beer. Last year’s oatmeal stout was much more interesting.

Pours near black with a garnet halo. Very thin tan head that disappears almost immediately and almost no lacing either. The aroma is pretty nice, smokey and chocolatey. Medium-bodied and fairly effervescent for a Porter. Flavors of malt, nuts and coffee are nicely blended. There is a light smokey character in the flavor too. The finish is short and lightly bitter. Above average overall.
