At Nationale Bierhappening in Zottegem. One of the beers in this Flanders Fields series intended to commemorate the First World War - an initiative from a brewing company seemingly set up for the occasion, with this one being executed at Van Eecke. Very thick and frothy, tightly lacing, egg-white head, misty chestnut brown robe with coppery hue. Aroma of dried apple peel, brown sugar, soggy brown bread, ripe apricots, moldy hazelnuts, banana, sweet strawberries and some wet dog. Sweet and sugary onset, lots of candied fig and strong banana ester sweetness, sourish redcurrant-like side note, fizzy carbonation but still more or less tolerable for the style, caramelly and bit resiny malt body with a metallic tinge to it; softly herbal, tea-ish hop bitter note in the end alongside earthy yeastiness, phenolic spiciness and a lot of warming, rum- and port-like alcohol. Quadrupel in the La Trappe sense of the word, amberish coloured, boozy and very sweet but technically decent.
