Description
One Tributary Leads to Another… that was the aha! moment when Tod Mott and his wife, Galen came upon the name of their new brewery. Tributary Brewing Company is Tod’s long-held dream of brewing his own beer and having his own place to serve it. Tod has been a master brewer for over two decades, working with some of the region’s most renowned breweries. Most fans know him as New England’s brewing legend, the creator of the original recipe of the highly acclaimed Harpoon IPA, and Portsmouth Brewery’s cult-status, Kate the Great Russian Imperial Stout.

We find the inspiration for Tributary beer in the landscape of Southern Maine, with its winding brooks, salt water marshes, and tidal rivers converging into the mighty Piscataqua River. Tod and Galen are passionate environmentalists and understand the critical importance of good, clean water.

Water is the most vital component in the brewing process; Tributary is our metaphor for the delicate brewing process. Tod’s skill, ingenuity, and creativity, combined with our mission to preserve this way of life, results in small batches of Tod’s favorite recipes for traditional, well-balanced, full-bodied beers — many of them! Tributary’s home is the coastal town of Kittery, Maine. We use only the finest malt and hops in our brews for beer lovers locally and beyond.

Draft at the source. Black color, ruby highlight, white head. Aroma has dark chocolate, charcoal ash, Mild coffee grounds. Flavor is pretty well true to style and completely correct to the style. Lighter body, ample roast, and smoky (char) dryness for the texture. The roast is stronger than the smoke with a very light bitterness for balance. The brewers at Tributary yet again make another spot on representation of the style. Lovely.

Draft at the source. Ruby in color with white head. Aroma is toasted grain, beady malt and yeast.

Has a bready malt backbone. Very low hop note but it is here. Medium chewy yeasty body, soft carbonation. Semi-dry on the palate. The bitterness gives the lightest balance to the malts and yeast. Quite decent this one, but you have to really like the style. Drinks easily.

Draft at the source. Amber/ golden in color, thin head. Aroma is toffee, spicy yeast and fruit hints. Flavor is malty upfront and turns into a peppery yeast bite in the finish.

ABV is hidden well. And only noticed after the glass is empty. Body is medium. Soft carbonation level with the texture becoming dry. Overall very good and a classic Belgian inspired ale.

Catch up rating from Saturday’s RIS bottle share. A bit on the watery side for the style, hints of chocolate on top of the roast grains, but lacking the oomph factor as well. Just not quite there.

On tap at the source. Big citrus and tropical fruit on the nose with hints of pine and resin. Light bread and a hint of caramel. This smells fantastic and doesn’t taste half bad either. Almost enjoyed this as much as the Lesser.
