Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with orange glints and a tan head. Aroma is lightly smoky malt/treacle. Med body at least. Flavor is smoky, med dark malt - hint of fruit. Finishes not very dry, the the smoke helps keep the malt subdued. Like it.

On tap at the Trappist. It pours a nice clear yellow gold color with a small creamy white head. The aroma is pleasant with bread, gum and earthy/floral hops. The flavor is grainy, lightly citrusy, floral and earthy. Some notes of bread crust. Low bitterness with full, pale maltiness. Smooth and clean on the palate. These guys usually kill it with German styles.

Shared 650 ml bottle, as Ol’ Republic Pub Ale (English-style Ale), in Nevada City. Drank it too cold from a frosted glass. Copper colour, large off-white head. Aroma and flavour of a typical English bitter with toffee notes, just with some more alcohol. Fuller’s ESB is probably what they try to emulate here - this one is not quite as good as Fuller’s, but a nice try.

Pint at the brewery tap. Deep golden to copper colour, white head. Typical English IPA aroma and flavour of earthy and slightly spicy English hops, sufficiently well hopped throughout to be interesting. Refreshing and easy drinking, recommended.

Shared bottle in Sacramento, as Ol’ Republic Bläk Bavarian-style Black Lager. Very dark brown colour, beige head. Mild and dryish roasty aroma. Medium dry and roasty flavour, easy drinking. This is a decent rendition of the classical East German Schwarzbier style (which originates in Thüringen and Sachsen, not in Bavaria as the brewers at Ol’ Republic seem to think).

Bottle, in Sacramento. Golden colour, white head. Fairly crisp and fresh aroma and flavour, with subtle hops. Refreshing. South German helles is a low key and discrete beer style, and the brewery in Nevada City has not fallen for the temptation to change that. Nice one.

On tap at Hogs Apothecary. It pours black with a light tan head. The aroma is rich with caramel, bread and cocoa syrup. The flavor is smoky with a delicate mouthfeel. Light notes of brown sugar. Not too roasted, but very smoky with light herbal/floral bitterness. Fairly light bodied, but good flavor. Really tasty.

Tap at West Coast Invitational 2015. Pour gold with a white head. Aroma is mild rye spice. Flavor is rye/bread/ noble spice. Rye saves kolsch. What a concept.

Bottle. Pours clear reddish amber with a medium creamy beige head with good staying power and nice lacing. Aroma is caramel, nutty, some grass. Flavor is medium sweet and quite light bitter, malty, nutty, with just a touch of grassy hop. Medium body, Very solid for style.
