Tap at Capital Beerfest 2013. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is hoppy with smooth burnt malt and a touch of chocolate. Flavor is mostly smooth burn malt, finishing with touches of chocolate and coffee. Seems dry to me.

On draft at the brewhouse in a sampler. Straw-gold with a white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is great sweet cracker malt. Taste is malt-forward initially with a slight spicy, hop finish.

On draft at the brewhouse in a sampler. Pours a clear copper color with an off-white head. Not much aroma here - some slight malt peeking through. Flavor is rich biscuity with a nice, slight earthy hop finish.

On draft at the brewhouse. Deep, deep brown with brown head. Massive coffee, chocolate and licorice aroma. Very rich with full mouthfeel and nice roasted barley accents. Chocolate again throughout the taste. Dry and slightly astringent with a great bitter finish. The rich, malt aspects and the hop bitterness strike a great balance. This beer is so amazingly good -- like their Black Lager, this is an amazing representation of this beer.

On draft at the brewhouse. Perfume and alcohol dominate the nose. Colo(u)r is a fiery sunset, with another very clear beer from these guys and an off-white head. Very nice spice throughout, and you can really get some nice honey off of this. This turns into a completely different -- and even better -- beer as it warms in the glass.

On draft at the brewhouse. Wow!!! This beer almost defies description. Pours a light gold with a full white head. Slightly hazy. Great floral and earth aromas -- much like a fresh cut meadow. Lots of orange and citrus with a balanced wheat and bread malt. Bitterness works perfectly on this beer. This is not really an IPA - it really is a summer refreshing that is light, but has hops massively packed and exploding in this beer. That said, it’s ability to make it taste delicate and not hop centric makes it an amazing, nuanced beer. Very unique, and worth trying.

On draft at the brewhouse. Pours brushed gold and clear (like all of their beers) with a great which head. Aroma is of earthy hops. Flavor is malty grain with the same earth hop flavo(u)r. Very well-balanced and beautiful looking IPA.

On draft at the brewhouse. Pours a gold, copper with an off-white head. Lots of malt dominating this flavor, which leans towards the malt versus the hops. While i really liked this beer, i thought it was not to style....which kind of threw me off really enjoying this. I guess living in the Bay Area, i just expect this to be an Anchor Clone -- probably my bad on that. In any event, more hops would have helped this one out...but it still scores very well!

On draft at the brewhouse. Pours a very deep brown with garnet highlights. Taupe head layers nicely over the top and remains. Lots of great roasted coffee on the aroma. Taste is also great coffee and roast with a crisp, very dry finish. Bitterness shows its head at the end in an elegant manner. As was repeated later with the sampler, this may be the best beer in this style i have ever had.
