Description
The farm was built in 1669 by abbess Johanna van Tilborch. The family escutcheon of the abbess is still hanging above the gate of the old farm. In 1936, the farm was bought by Theophile Cordonnier (1880 – 1965) together with the agriculture ground and the rest of the abbey. In 1985 was a new farm build opposite of the old farm. All the ground and buildings are still belonging to the children and grandchildren of Theophile Cordonnier.

All the basic products to produce the Halen Mariënrode abbey beers are still produced on the Mariënrode farm. Joseph Cordonnier ( born in 1932) is still in charge of the production of our products. He will be only satisfied when we produce the products of the highest quality. Quality has always been his only objective in the production of food on the farm.

Bottle 648. Thanks Radu! Dark black with a good head for that alc%. Amazing complex peat sweet nose! Flavor is Romanian smoked dried plums. Great smooth mixture of crazy whisky flavors, could even be Chinese dried spiced plums. Toasted malts in there too of course. Amazing.

19/XI/19 - 75cl bottle @ HoReCa-Expo Gent, BB: n/a - (2019-1856) Thanks to the brewers and the Ghent Beer Posse for sharing today’s beers!

Apparently they put the "Zonderik XII" in peated whisky barrels for five years, which was a good idea as nobody seemed to like the original beer back then. For some reason Zonderik changed names to Halen Breweries and they took these barrels with them, to release them under the new name.

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: dusty, spicy, nutmeg, some maple, oxidized, roasted, smoky touch. MF: soft roast, medium body. Taste: nice roast up front, acidic touch, little bitter, somewhat peated but just a little at first. Aftertaste: nice roast, lots of peat, nice one, just a little too oxidized.

Clear red brown beer, no head. Aroma: weird, very meaty, like veal and salami, very strange stuff, MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, soft acidity, fruity notes, bit artificial, candy notes, unpleasant meaty taste as well. Aftertaste: weird, sweet, soft acidity, strawberry jam, too sweet and sugary. --- Beer merged from original tick of Mariënrode Rood Zoet - on 02 Feb 2019 at 21:09 - Score: Appearance - 4 | Aroma - 1 | Flavor - 3 | Texture - 4 | Overall - 3. Cloudy red beer, small creamy light pink head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very bad smell, lots of sulphur, rotting stuff, dead yeast (autolyse?), very bad. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: all sugary start, bad rotting fruits, pretty dirty, some candy. Aftertaste: more of the same, highly unpleasant.

2 February 2019. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to tderoeck, 77ships, Jerre, Kevin & Anke! Hazy yellow with a lasting, small, frothy, white head; some lacing. Aroma of grain, grass, straw, cereal, apple peel, unripe apricot, yeast, iron. Taste is light fruity sweet, some apple & apricot, hints of cereal & white bread, quite yeasty too, light grainy bitterness gives it a 'raw' character, sourish wheat & lemon in the back but also a metallic touch. Dryish, grainy finish, a bit grassy hoppy, too yeasty with a iron accents. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. I think this could only pass as a sessionable 'Belgian Blond', still too raw and unfinished as a whole.
