Description
Alaska has a rich history of brewing. From the explorers of the 1700s through the Gold Rush, many a thirsty Alaskan has been able to enjoy locally made beers.
In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

On Tap at Kahootz A clear pale yellow/golden with a small white head with not much lacing. Aroma was very faint as was the flavors. Wheat, with doughy nd yeast notes..but very subdued. Slightly sweet as well. Feel was very light and smooth. Easy drinking, fairly tasty.

Another gift from the mother-in-law after an Alaskan cruise. The beer is a dark brownish but clear color with a medium and creamy beige head. Thin lacing. The aroma is nicely malted and toasty. Medium-bodied and smooth, with malt, caramel and nut flavors in varying degrees. Light hop finish. Overall not the best Alt available but I was impressed enough that I would get it again.

Alaskan Summer, huh? What’s next, Jamaican Winter beer? But seriously folks, this beer was a nice surprise from the mother-in-law who went on an Alaskan cruise. It’s great to have everyone you know trained to look for beer any time they travel. The Free Willy scene on the label is interesting too. As for the beer, it is a clear light orange color with a thin white head. Very little lacing. The aroma is light citrus and hops. Light and crisp mouthfeel, with sweet fruit, malt and hops flavors. Citrus comes in again with the finish, with a bit of lingering caramel. Overall this is a decent Kölsch.

Bottle 2001 Pours black with a medium size dark tan head. This goes down pretty quick but the lacing is fine and even. Aroma is very chocolate and Smoke, mesquite axactually. Also some licorice and molassas. Wow, taste is VERY Smokey. Can’t taste much hops...or much of anything else. Feel is moderately thick and the finish is creamy and smooth. A specialized beer for a specific taste. Good Stuff.

On tap at the Skidmore Fountain open-air market in Portland, 7 August 2004. Wouldn’t have guessed it was an altbier, but that makes sense. The body was quite malty with layers of caramel and touches of toast, but grassy, spicy (almost peppery) hops provided a nice complement to the malts. Good stuff, even though it was served out of a plastic cup for $5.

Bottle pours a light amber with a small fizzy head that leaves little lacing. Aroma is a bit sweet and distinctly apple. The slightly fruity sweet flavor is ther as well. Lively carbonation and a dry hoppy finish. Pretty good and light enough to be quite refreshing.

Acquired via trade. 2003 Bottle: The beer is an almost opaque dark brown color with a thin light brown head. Thin and sticky lacing. The aroma of course has a strong smoked character, along with malt, soy sauce and coffee. Medium-bodied and mellow, with flavors of coffee, cocoa and malt underneath the smoke. The finish is dry and lightly bitter. I have been waiting awhile to get my hands on this beer and I was not let down.

Bottled in 2003 Thanks to Eyedrinkale for bringing this to Brewtopia ’04. Black with minimal head. The aroma is smoky, yet the malt aroma comes through with hints of dried fruit. The flavor is also malty with a good smoky presence which doesn’t overpower everything like some smoked beers do. Very nice.

Deep amber. Poured with virtually no head. Smells like pretty typical amber brews. Smooth going down, but has a quite average/plain taste. Seems like they could have done a lot more with this one (especially since I’ve heard so many good things about the Alaskan brews).

2003 edition. This dark brown-bodied porter poured with a minimal light tan head. Smoked malt aroma carries over into the flavor- I felt I was drinking liquefied smoked chubs (oh, so good!). Salty cured meat with toasty, roasted malt flavors carry the body. Rather thin-bodied. Also rather unidimensional.
