Description
Alaska has a rich history of brewing. From the explorers of the 1700s through the Gold Rush, many a thirsty Alaskan has been able to enjoy locally made beers.

In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

Deep amber. Poured with virtually no head. Smells like pretty typical amber brews. Smooth going down, but has a quite average/plain taste. Seems like they could have done a lot more with this one (especially since I’ve heard so many good things about the Alaskan brews).

2003 edition. This dark brown-bodied porter poured with a minimal light tan head. Smoked malt aroma carries over into the flavor- I felt I was drinking liquefied smoked chubs (oh, so good!). Salty cured meat with toasty, roasted malt flavors carry the body. Rather thin-bodied. Also rather unidimensional.

My first Alaskan (it’s my frist time in Cali). Fruity and slick, is the way i can describe it- a good beer- with everything I expected from an Alaskan brew (I’ve been hearing many good things)

Bottled, thanks rauchbier! Near black. Smokey licorice aroma. Firm and rounded, but a bit clean. Intricate mix of burnt malt with smoke. Salty finish.

[Vintage 2003] A black beer with a chocolate brown collapsing head. The aroma is smoked yet sweet with notes of tar and blubber. The flavor is sour malty with notes of wood and only slightly smoked. But the alcohol runs over the tongue even though the mouthfeel is thin yet soft.

2003 bottle. Interesting stuff here. At first I think, well they went and forgot about the beer. But as it warmed and I sipped it, I picked up a lightly hoppy amber ale in the background, a nice distinct hops quality was definitely there. Great smoke flavor, not quite as deep (well nowhere near really) as the aecht schlenkerla line. Good though, medium light body is a big drawback. 19641968. If you think this shit is good, try the aecht rauchbier urbock. That stuff will rock your world. This is practically unsmoked compared to that. Still a good beer, but in need of a serious injection of malt. Looks good, though it’s filtered. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of light smokey bacon and burnt fat. It’s funny how some beers just hint at goodness and make you want to go out and buy the better example. I am off to purchase some aecht schlenkerla.

Deep amber color with hints of ruby make this look like an ESB should look. Caramel malt and hops come to the nose and the flavor is a well balanced echo of the aroma that ends with a slightly bitter hop finish. Not bad.

Flat dark ale with a strongly hopped vineous aroma and a mainly bitter flavour. A basic American strong ale.

Golden colour with some haze, starts with a nice citrussy nose but with a little bit of cardboard. Again, in the mouth, there is a plaeasnt hops and citrus dancing together, but there seems to be some oxidation. Still a rather pleasant beer

Bottle. 2003. dark (not quite black) body with a cocoa colored head that disapates quickly. Aroma isn't as strong as I'd thought. Faint roastiness with a hint of chocolate. The flavor is a fantastic smokey/chocolate/cofee/caramel/creaminess that tingles the tongue. The smoke doesn't overpower, but blends very well (the high alcohol content helps and makes it's presense known). Very smooth and drinkable. Very good beer.
