In the hands of the Bosteels family for over 200 years, the brewery relies today on the craftmanship of seven generations. In 1791, Jean-Baptist Bosteels established the brewery, and has been followed by generations who took over the brewery with zeal and never stop brewing even during the world wars. At that time, the brewery played such an important role in the town, the family Bosteels was such influential people that we are not surprised that 3 on the 7 generations have been Town Mayors.

In the 1930’s Antoine Bosteels, 5th generation, carried on the brewing dynasty and played an important role expanding the sales of the Bosteels Pils into other regions such as Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. His son Ivo Bosteels honored the iconic beer of Pauwel Kwak by bringing it back to the market in 1980; this is the beginning of the strong beers for the Brewery Bosteels. In the year 1990, Ivo’s son, Antoine Bosteels, the 7th generation, understood the potential of the strong beers and especially the trend for the blond ones. Driven by passion of the art of brewing and guided by his creativity, Antoine is at the roots of the Tripel Karmeliet and the DeuS Brut des Flandres.

It was announced in 2016 that the brewery would be taken over by beer giant AB InBev, however Antoine Bosteels will remain chairman of the Board of Directors and will also remain operationally involved to ensure business continuity. In addition, the brewing activities will remain based in Buggenhout.

2010-07-30, vintage 2004, 6 years old, 8-4-8-3-15=38
Hazy blond color; generous head, light; wonderful perlage. It has a very nice aroma, with coriander and oranges; it’s a bit soapy too, and lightly herbal (rosemary, mirth). Good body strength; spicy and herbal flavor, malt; it seems quite sweet now, also because the bitterness is gone. It doesn’t show signs of age; still interesting, but a bit too herbal.

2004-07-30, current vintage,
Light blond color. Strange aroma: lemonade, pipermint, herbs, flowers, honey, vanilla, incense, citrus fruits; odd.
Tastes like a strange Triple; some alcohol punch, a bit oily, honey (mead-like…).
Quite good, but not worthy… Thanks Philippe (Bov) for sharing this bottle.

(draught) Deep amber colour, clear; head is amber as well, creamy, but is too influenced by the glass by half. Ambrée and cookie malt nose. Cookies, or more precisely cake, or sweet pie-bottom. It’s just a tad roasted. Not my favourite style, but it’s done in an appropriate way. Compliments. Medium bodied, just a bit dry. Sweetness remains until the aftertaste, but it never imposes itself to the detriment of the overall. It gets liqueurish in the aftertaste, the alcohol coming through. Pauwel Kwak was a tad lowered in alcohol during its existence. Exceptionally, I think they didn’t do it a disservice, the other one had a too -fast-enough streak.

Cloudy yellow beer with a thick, lasting white head. Fresh aroma with lemon, coriander, fruits and honey. Lemon and candy flavour with a hint of alcohol. Big almost oily mouthfeel.

Draft. Clear amber beer with a thin white head. Yeast and spice aroma, but not that strong. Banana and yeast flavors that are a bit overshadowed by the bubblegum taste. Too sweet and not enough depth.

Flat amber beer with a fruity almost strawberry sweet aroma. The flavour is fruity but with a harsh bitter finish. Overall quite a poor Belgian beer.

Bottle Pours a very light pale hazy blonde. A very agressive white head that left nice lacing. Aroma is fruity including bananas, apples. Flavour was sweet and a bit spicey. Cloves, bananas again. Quite sweet. Nice feel, smooth, carbonation is lively but soft. Pleasant mild lingering aftertaste.

Bottled. Golden colour, champagnelike sparkling head. Aroma of malt anf toffee. Firm and full bodied, yet with light, sparkling mouthfeel. Medium sweet. Fresh and peppery. Very complex, yet drinkable. A good beer, but only the presentation is really fantastic.

Rich golden colour. Bright and clear. Aroma of PineSol, cologne, spices (mace, cardamom) and occasional biscuity malts. The body is spritzy yet thick - an odd combination. Rich, slighlty caramelized bready malt notes abound, along side overly assertive pine needles. Slightly tart. An odd beer, quite the experience. Do as suggested and serve cold because the thickness as it warms clashes with the elements it wants to present.

Poured clear copper with a medium light tan head that quickly disappeared. One thing I found curious about this beer was the strong alcohol flavor- rare for a Belgian ale of only 8% ABV. Otherwise the flavor was not very complex, with apple peel and vinous notes leading to a somewhat drier, crackery finish. Aroma was also of apple peel. Almost reminiscent of an alcoholic apple cider, this just isn’t a very complex beer.
