Bathams Bitter, regarded by some as one of the finest in the country, would never have been if it was not for the pernickety tastebuds of pub regulars in a quiet Worcestershire village, and the brewing skills of Mr D.B.A (Arthur) Batham.

Half a cask pint @ Plough & Harrow, Kinver. Cycled 50 miles there for opening at 1pm, so first draw perhaps wasnt in best condition. Dusty, lightly oxidised impressions, but its smooth full toffee character could still be appreciated, super smooth palate, very easy drinking. Deep amber appearance with creamy off-white collar. Just a shame it wasnt in the best condition. Rated minus the dustiness.

500ml bottle. Amber with small white head, nice lacing and retention. Aroma of caramel malts, grain, hay. Taste is bready malts, some grain, nice light fresh floral and grassy hops leading to a moderate bitter finish. Light to moderate body but a nice carbonation which seems to work well. Its simple but very well made.

Cask @ Bull & Bladder, Bathams brewpub, paired with a pork pie and mustard from the bartop fridge. Pours a deep clear amber, small off-white head. Aroma is light caramelised malt. Very light on the palate, gentle caramel, gentle malt grain.. a classic that really should be drunk by the gallon, but unfortunately I had to make do with a half. Next time!

Just don't agree with Nottingham Yeast. Attenuated well but bland and sickly sweet. Floral and hoppy.
