Description
The Flagship Brewery was first brought to the Historic Dockyard at Chatham in 1995 where it established a five-barrel kit brewing up to 100 firkins a week.

In 2003 the brewery went into receivership and was bought and renamed the Nelson Brewing Company to fall in line with the most famous naval hero of all time 'Admiral Horatio Nelson' and that his flagship 'The Victory' was built here in Chatham Dockyard.

In July 2006 the brewery was purchased by current owner Piers Macdonald. Piers now has over 25 years’ experience in the brewing industry and is passionate to keep the traditions of Kent brewing alive but has also expanded into the Craft Beer world. Using ingredients from Local and National suppliers combined with the expertise and dedication of his brewing staff, Piers plans to build on the brewery's already growing reputation as the provider of some of the tastiest ales on the market.

Now brewing from a seven-and-a-half-barrel kit we regularly have over a dozen ales of various strengths and taste available. All the ales are nautically themed to gel with the surroundings in which it is brewed and the brewery is sure to have a beer to suit all!

The proprietor of the Nelson Brewery since 2006 passed away in June 2023. Shortly after, brewing ceased and the brewery's assets were sold in September 2023.

Note - beers brewed by Flagship Brewery prior to the 2003 purchase and renaming are separately listed.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Copper colour with lasting beige head. Rather a lovely biscuity bitter. Good malty fruit too. Excellent yeast aroma. Like a digestive biscuit with red berry fruit jam on. Excellent dry finish. This brewery is getting better.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Brewed especially for JDW according to the pump clip. Hazy amber colour with thin beige head. Some caramel on aroma, tangy hops on finish. Hops are fun on a standard bitter.

Cask gravity at The Chambers BF 07, Folkestone. I guess this is named after the Task Force sent to the Falkland Islands, 25 years ago. Slight haze on the copper colour with thin beige head. Earthy hop and some rich fruity malt aroma. Very fruity in mouth, fruit salad mix. Surprising fruit and hop finish. Tingly, but still muddy/earthy.

Cask at The Admiral Hardy, Greenwich. Served in a wine glass. Aroma of smoky fruit? Almost opaque brown color with orange/ruby hilites. Beautiful. Persisting beige head. Full mouthfeel. Starts with ripe stone fruit and underlying earthy hop. Malt comes on, but well balanced by bitter. Very smooth. Resembles port in body. Some port! Beefy comes to mind. Fantastic.

Cask gravity at White Cliffs BF 2007. Deep copper colour with disappearing beige head. Malty aroma, quite fresh. Good fruits in mouth. Bit of choc. Nelson beers have certainly improved since they got a new brewer. 3.3/5 Re-rate at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. This is a nice deep fruity bitter, with a bit of choc as I said before. Surprisingly good.

500ml bottle from Cask & Glass, Tonbridge. Black with dark brown edges. Lasting beinge head. Lots of dark plums, damsons on this choccy stout. Blackcurranty nose, with some dark choc. Almost vinousaroma. Really quite complex. Touch of vanilla. The fruit is very good indeed. Even some sourness towards the end. Think of a damson dark chocolate liquer that you had at your aunties at Christmas and you are on your way. Nelson recently certainly have seemed to have turned the corner. Some powderyness in the mouth. But overwhelmingly juicy dark fruits that veer towards the sour.

500ml bottle from Phil_L, who I think bought it at the new brewery shop. Deep dark red colour with thin reddish beige head. Black cherry, malt, bit of yeast, bit of hop aroma. Bottle conditioned too. Good carbonation in mouth, goodish choc and black cherry flavours. Some chalkiness. Finish has some goodish hop. Bit sharp actually which conflicts with the fullness of the choc malt and fruit from the start of the beer. Good interesting winter beer. Cherry flavour is particularlyinteresting.

[Cask at GBBF] Pale brown. Neutral nose. Medium sweet with rounded mouthfeel. Raw and sugary. Too sweet to refresh, and completely without flavours to catch my interest.
