2021-10-23, vintage 2021, 11.8% ABV, 8-4-8-4-17=41
Good balance of roast and sweetness, very good, but in today's panorama this beer is not the highlight anymore.
2020-03-30, vintage 2017, 13.2% ABV, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Lean, balanced, with chocolate flavour, touch of liquorice, moderate sweetness, and not really much bourbon.
2019-02-12, vintage 2019, 10.3% ABV, at The Gull, 7-4-7-3-15=36
Dark brown colour, near black. Notes of cardboard in the aroma. The mouthfeel is a bit thinner than I remember from previous vintages. The main character comes from the roasted malt; little sweetness; no barrel notes; it mellows out as it gets warmer, but still can't achieve greatness.
Good beer, but I'm a bit disappointed by the decline.
2017-11-25, vintage 2017, 13.2% ABV, 8-5-8-4-17=42
Initially the liquorice notes are stronger, later the chocolate is more evident, and even a note of espresso. In the final, some bourbon. Pungent, excellent.
2017-03-24, vintage 2017, 13.2% ABV, 8-5-8-4-17=42
Such young sample is characterized by the power of the roasted malts, coffee, lean body, off-dry mouthfeel, and moderate bourbon.
Excellent.
2016-09-11, same vintage (2013), 3+ years old, 8-4-9-4-18+43
The age has mellowed out this brew, has softened the edges, without weakening any trait; sweet dark chocolate with bourbon, leather and tobacco. Warming alcohol.
Wonderful.
2013-11-15, Winter 2012/2013, vintage 2013, one year old, 8-4-8-4-17=41
Pitch black color, small head. Strong aroma of roasted malt, whiskey barrel, raisins, light vanilla, some alcohol, tobacco, leather; complex. Thick and heavy body; round mouthfeel; it has a strong flavor of roasted malt and chocolate; the vanilla and Bourbon is very strong too; it has some liquorice and leather; medium to strong bitterness, with sharp alcohol presence, yet not boozy.
Very interesting.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark red with moderate purple head that dissipates quickly. Initial sulphury aroma settles down to a thick jammy currant and vegetable notes. A combination of vinegar, currents, beets, vanilla, and black cherries. Odd and interesting. A beer infused juice concoction. Tastes like a health food drink.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrus and grapefruit hops is quite powerful and enjoyable. Taste is also a great mix between some citrus hops with a good amount of grapefruit notes, medium bitterness and some light caramelized malt with a touch of residual sugar. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Very well brewed but I would preferred a bit less residual sugar with a dryer finish.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a relatively large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of earthy bitter hops with light dry caramel malt notes. Taste is also a well-balanced mxi between some earthy hops with some citrus bitter notes with a solid dry caramel malt backbone. Body is above average for style with good carbonation. Very enjoyable beer with nice earthy hops mix but not sure it has much to do with actual Bitter anymore.

Re-rate: Heard this year’s batch was good and haven’t tried it in years, also nothing good on tap here at Good Co (Colony) Northwoods. Clear gold with small white head. A fairly light pilsnery malt with some crystal malt in there, pine hops, touch of citrus hops, could use some more body, and maybe slightly stronger hopping, but it’s decent. Sept 17, 2013 (8/3/7/3/15=3.6): Poured from 650mL bottle. Clear orangey yellow with white head. Citrusy hop aroma. Bitter hop taste with dry finish. Medium body, oily texture.
