Description
Brewing started behind the Royal Clarence Hotel, and in those days trading as the Royal Clarence Hotel Brewery, in Burnhan-on-Sea in August 1982. A 5 barrel brew plant was used primarily to supply the hotel only. The brewery was taken over in May 1984 and the beers became more available in the free trade. Due to problems with the water supply, the brewery was using that much that hotel guests could not wash, the brewery moved in January 1993 to an old cider mill in West Hewish, Weston-super-Mare. Capacity was tripled during the move and in 2000 work started on upgrading the plant to a 30 barrel brew length. The brewery closed in early 2017 but relaunched shortly afterwards as Pitchfolk Brewery.

Cask. Looks very dark, with ruby tinges. A foamy beige head leaves a bit of lacing. Aromas of milk chocolate, hint of coffee, dark fruits. Taste- more chocolate and cocoa, dry roasty quality, liquorice, blackcurrant. Medium to full mouthfeel. Very nice.

Bottle @ home. Clear amber colour with a medium sized wgite head and lots of bubbles. Smells malty, some iron, a bit like a pilsener. Tastes sweet, malty, grains, slightly bitter. Nothing crazy. Medium to heavy carbo, medium body.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 04/2016
Lots of foaming and yeast(?) particles when pouring โ€“ unusual for a British beer. Aroma has peaches, biscuits and funky yeast. Also some hay and minerals. So far this has quite a strong Belgian feeling. Lots of CO2 and foam on palate โ€“ makes this hard to drink. Flavour has minerals, grainy tones, some yeast and hints of citrus. At the beginning this feels rather straightforward. And at the middle of the glass this has gained rather strong and unpleasant herbal bitterness. A bit unusual for a Bitter, more like a golden ale. Not the most typical golden ale either, though. And not a beer for me; drinking this started well but I finally ended up with drain pour.

Deep mahogany in hue with a large cream head. Quite a fizz on this one which for me is unbecoming in a porter. Artificial chocolate and antique wardrobes up front. Creamy mouthfeel that heads towards gloopy. Thereโ€™s a little hint of flowers and citrus behind; the beer could be much improved by strengthening these flavours. At the same time you could maybe cut back on the slightly unpleasant notes of chalk and charcoal in the finish. As you may have guessed, this beer was not for me.
