Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a murky pale orange with minimal white head, good lacing and medium carbonation. Not much of an aroma – just some hints of tropical fruit. In the mouth it is slightly sharp with a creamy texture. Flavour has floral hops, citrus and tropical fruit, plus a hint of spices. This combination gradually mellows – leading to a slightly dry finish. This is a bit of a grower – takes some getting used to.

Cask @ The Pheasant, Wellington. Hazed gold, white head. Pretty bad, sour aroma, awful sour taste with used flannel notes. Can't recall the last time I took a beer back, but I had to on this occasion. Staff informed me the beer was like it from the day it went on, so rating stays.

Cask at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours a very dark brown with a small foamy cream head. Coffee is the mainstay of the aroma, along with chocolate and roast malts. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with a creamy texture. Flavour has cola, milk chocolate and roast malts, together with hints of lemon, nuts and vanilla. Finish is slightly bitter. This is rather nice – there’s a good dose of chocolate but it isn’t overdone.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a murky dark brown with a small beige head. The aroma is mainly chocolate and malt. In the mouth, it’s a bit of a strange one. It starts off exactly like you would expect from a stout – malts, chocolate and a hint of cola. Then suddenly it changes completely and lemon and citrus come through strongly. The previous sweetness turns into something slightly sour ! Finish is bitter and slightly dry. It’s a decent enough beer – but seems to have a personality crisis !
