Notes from August 2016. Poured from the bottle, the beer shows a bit of a murky brown to tan color, with a very short-lived ring of foam at the top. The smell is pretty malty, nice enough in itself, but there is a lack of the warm ferment funk or spice you would expect with a farmhouse ale. What I also get is a light orange peel among the malts in the palate. It comes across more like a Doppelbock than a saison. A bit of Belgian style sugar puts this a little too much toward the sweet side. I would hope that once Finch gets their brewery situation settled, they’ll look at the formulation of this beer, as I would not expects Minhas to be able to handle unusual styles like this very well. A farmhouse or saison needs a little space of its own the cultivate a bit of funk away from the rest of the brewery.

Can 1 pint. Pours a clear black with a deep burgundy red and a beige head. Amazing aroma, citrusy hops blending in with subtle roast. Medium body, discreet sweetness in the malt balanced out by a dry bitterness - but everything is so subtle and refined. One of the best Black IPAs I’ve ever had. 291116 8/4/8/3/15

Can 1 pint. Pours golden with a slight haze and a small, white head. Sweet malt, flowery hops in the nose. Rich malty body, kinda sweet, a little petroleum, slightly perfumy hops. Alcohol surprisingly well hidden. Very decent. 291116

Can 1 pint. Pours a cloudy, reddish amber with a lacing, off-white head. Distinct, sweet Bourbon aroma, lots of vanilla and oak. Medium body, malty yet slightly tart with very distinct Bourbon accents. Some late, bittering hops. One of those occasions where the barrels add a slight acidity to the beer. 291116

Can 1 pint. Pours a cloudy amber with an off-white head. Sweet, caramellish aroma. Rich, malty body, caramel and booze. Not overly sweet or cloying, hops only come late. Decent but just not really all that convincing. 291116
