Description
"It all started in 1980… Hugh Sisson, a Maryland native, theater grad school major, and all-around good guy, joins his family’s restaurant & bar, “Sisson’s” located on Cross Street in South Baltimore.
Craft beer wasn’t even on the radar back then. But, Hugh quickly recognized that to run a business, you need to do something to be different.
Light bulb moment: “What if we turned Sisson’s into a brewpub and brewed our own beer?”
Solid plan, right? Problem: Brewpubs weren’t legal in Maryland at the time.
In 1987, Hugh worked with Maryland legislators to draft a bill to legalize brewpubs in Baltimore City – the bill passed on first attempt. Fast forward to 1989, “Sisson’s” becomes the first brewpub in the state of Maryland.
After the brewpub scene for a few years, Hugh felt the need for a bigger stage (theater-pun intended.) In 1994, he left “Sisson’s” for his next business venture… and the rest, friends, is nothing short of Maryland craft beer history"

Bottle thanks to xproudfoot. Translucent but murky red-brown body, thin light head. Aroma of toast and raisin. Body extremely light, thin, with notes of raisin, soy, and coffee, in addition to roasted malts and subtle hints of alcohol. Four parts water, one part beer.

Medium amber pour, with minimal, fizzy head - aroma of fruity pastries and bread yeast - very thin for such a strong ale - burnt/carmelized sugar up front, followed by some wintery spices and a toasty/roasted quality - quite one-dimensional - semi-bitter, burnt-tasting finish - disappointing.

Bottle at LCRBM 2, Kulminator, Antwerp, Belgium.
Hazy brown body. Off-white, creamy head. Aroma of malts and liquor. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. Quite nice stout, smoothly drinkable, but still lacks some complexity.

Sample at Brew Kettle: Pours a clear orange-gold color with a thin white head that has decent retention. Thin, spotty lacing. Aroma of spices (mostly ginger) and yeast, plus a healthy dose of fruit. Light-bodied and crisp with zesty citrus, wheat and yeast flavors. The finish is tingly on the tongue with a lasting spice finish. I ended up enjoying this one.

Poured a golden yellow with almost no head from the bottle. Very interesting hop aroma, fruity, piney and sweet. The hop complexity in the initial flavor is astounding. This beer hits all areas of your palate. It’s sweet, it’s a little sour, there’s a hint of malt. The hop flavor is really unique, must be from the Chinook hops. Flavor hides the heavier than usual alcohol as well. A little astringent on the finish, but the complexity of this beer and the different hop profiles it provides make this worth a sip.

[Bottled] Deep golden, buttery aroma. Sweet and caramelly with clean, hard mouthfeel. Dominated by crystal malt in sort of a pastisch of the style. There are some nice flavours, but a Märzen needs to be softer to be enjoyable.

An amber beer with a thich light brown head. The aroma is malty with slight notes of both hops and caramel. The flavor is very sweet and matly, but also with strong notes of caramel, leading to a dry woody and bitter end.

12 oz bottle - Pours very dark brown with a moderate head and some lacing. The roast malts dominate the aroma, but it’s not as assertive as many imperial stouts. That’s a hint of what’s to come. While the flavor makes for a solid stout, as others have pointed out, it’s really mild for an impy. The body is moderately thick. There’s some hops in the finish. It makes for pleasant enough drinking, but ratebeerians have very high expectations of the imperial stout style and this lacks intensity.

Bottle. Drank it a while ago, but realized that it was the ESB and not the IPA version of this. Dark amber color, white head. Malty, bitter, and well rounded.
