Description
Pucker Up & Join the Sour Revolution

Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

Bottle: Poured a murky red color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sour cherries with some lightly sweet notes and some tannin and oak notes are also discernible. Taste is a very well balance mix between some tart notes, sour cherries with underlying sweetness and some light tannin and oak notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. Very well done and wouldn’t pale in comparison of some good Belgian fruit lambic.

Bottle, c&c, from Ledger’s. Pours a dark ruby (halogen light) with a sort of fizzy beige/tan head that didn’t last all that long. Overwhelming aroma of cherry and sour. Near medium body with fizzy carbonation. The flavor is cherry, oak, tart fruit. It is astringent, and arguably more than a little funky. Certainly a great sour ale.

750ml shared by CaptainCougar at the DC Local Gathering. Sweet and sour Flemish Red aroma. Some vinegar, lots of Brett. Amber brown color, murky. Lacy head. Lacks complexity oddly enough, seems to lean on the Brett to achieve a quality feel. Somewhat thin in it’s pungently sour way. For a sour-freak like myself, this doesn’t quite live up to the expectations.

Sampled at the DC Local Gathering. 750ml bottle. Pours a transparent copper amber with a whispy white head. Aroma is fruity, apples, perfume, slight funk. Flavor is acidic, sour to the point of being puckering, with pears, white grapes, slight funk, slightly woody. Finish is sour and lemony.

Bottle Pours out a hazy rust brown topped with a tan head. Aroma was over the top lots of vanilla, oak, cherries and a nice tartness. Taste was much more of the aroma lots of sweetness, cherries, grape, apple. More of the oak and vanilla. Another great sour from the Lodge. I think they are on to something.

On tap at Raccoon Lodge Portland, Pours out a copper topped with a white head. Aroma rings of fresh hops floral and sweetness. Taste was long lasting bitterness on the citrus hops. A nice malt to help as the hops try to take over. Another tast one from the Lodge.
