Description
The brewing industry in Grünbach has been documented since the early 18th century with the brewing law of 1723. After an eventful history, Herman Noll took over the brewery under the name of Schloßbrauerei Grünbach. In 1990 son Alexander took over the brewery in the third generation. After the year 2000 Alexander Noll started to look for a partner in order to be able to cope with the challenges of the beer market and also recognize the potential of the brewery in order to be able to continue investing in brand revitalization and expansion together. In 2013 this partner was found in the Arco-Bräu in Moos.

Bottle. Cloudy orange, big golden head. Spicy aroma notes - clove and dill pickles strangely enough. Medium body, mellow creamy mouthfeel. Yeast minerals, banana, light tropicals, ginger, pleasantly wrapped up, quite easy to drink and even somewhat moreish.

An authentically Bavarian Hefeweizen, from a sixpack of different beers from in and around Munich, thanks for this Glenn! Egg-white, moussy, coarse, lacing head, building up thickly in the beginning but lacking in density for this style and therefore quickly diminishing and opening, in the end all but gone; initially as good as clear but, with adding the sediment as is custom in this type of beers, hazy robe of ochre-tinged peach blonde, the haze perturbed by strings of vivid fizz. Aroma of half-ripe peaches, sourdough, red apple, soggy old white bread, pear, some ripe banana but not as expressively so as is typical for this style (and as I was hoping for), faint pineapple hint, dry cookies, damp straw, spicy notes of old cloves, white pepper, nutmeg. Crisp onset with fruity notes of peach, apple and, again, some banana but not quite enough for a Bavarian Weissbier, sweetish with sourish edges, the sourishness accentuated by the wheat as expected; carbonation is on the flattish side, could have been a tad more sparkling for the style, mouthfeel is slick, smooth and a bit ’fluffy’ from the yeast suspension. Slick ’wheatiness’ in the middle with a soft sourish character matched with ’white’ bready barley, but the wheat is dominant; ends with a bit more breadiness from the yeast, adorned with some phenolic spiciness (the proverbial cloves) and a floral hop touch, which adds a soft ’kiss’ of late, subtle but important bitterness to the back of the tongue. Breadiness and phenolic spicy accents linger after that. I guess they call this "Urweisse" to commercially ’exploit’ the fact that they are located in the right region for this type of beer and I can have nothing against that, but I have to admit that I expected a bit more of that lovely, fragrant ’mushy-banana-esteriness’ one finds in the great classics of this style; could have been a tad more carbonated as well, which would have sustained a much more pillowy head than is the case now. Rather understated example, frankly, but decent enough.
