On tap at Gourmet Haus. Aroma of mostly coffee and slight chocolate. Roasted malt also present. Black with garnet highlights and brown full head. Head falls quickly but laces down the glass. Medium viscous mouthfeel where coffee predominates. Sharp acidic up front. Great bitterness is the backbone of this beer showing abundant hops for the style. Mouthfeel lingers long.

Bottle shared at the 6th annual Richmond Industry Gathering, 11/27/11. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized frothy head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, citrus and berry-like fruits. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, berries and a bit of a chalky note. Medium-full bodied. Nice, and very drinkable.

On tap. Pours with a clear, quite amber (for a "golden pale ale") hue with a small off-white head. Aroma is shockingly malt for what I was expecting. Raw barley soup, caramel, bread, toasty, a hint of very light roast even. Moderate to light esters and some backing tropical fruit notes from the hops. Hop flavor is nice but seems crushed by the hops. Good balance for an amber maybe, but not what I was expecting for an APA from Kern. That said it is still a well crafted and balance beer. Quite a bit of malt character (barley soup), bready, light esters and some tropical hop fruitiness. Minimal bitterness. Medium to low body with moderate carbonation.

Draft at the brewpub. Nose is pine, citrus, and raosty nuts. Lightly hazy copper with a big, heavily lacing, beige head. Flavor is bitter, light caramel and honeycomb, mixed with hints of nuts and smokiness.

Pours a slightly cloudy orange color with a gushing thick off-white head that disspates very slowly. Not a good sign. Sticky small patches of lacing. Aroma of yeast and tropical fruits. Light to medium body with flavors of sweet fruit, yeast and malt. The finish is short and fruity. It is pretty safe to say there is something off with this bottle. Just average regardless.

Bottle thanks to Peter!. Pours cloudy gold with cream white head. Nose/taste of pineapple, mango, citrus, pine and caramel malt. Smooth and creamy hops with lots of pineapple and citrus and a semi dry pine and mango finish. Wonderful world class pineapple and tropical fruit nose falls a little short on the taste. Medium body.

On nitro tap. Rating 5300. Pours with a pitch black body and a lasting, and surprisingly large tan head. Aromas are huge: bourbon, chewy, fudge, chocolate and oak. Hints of maple, vanilla and a toasted maltiness. Roast is smooth. Flavors of dark fruit, currants, raisins, dates, chocolate, milk chocolate, mild roast, oak and light bourbon. Creamy mouthfeel. Rich, silky. Well hidden alcohol. Excellent!

22 oz bottle sent my way by alagnak. Pour is a hazed orange golden with a pretty two inch off white head. Aroma is orange citrus and resin hops up front, followed close by a nice cracker toasted malt. Nicely balanced nose, touch muted. This was not bottled dated, but likely not super fresh. Taste is the nose, nice balance between resin citrus hops and lightly sweet toasted malt. Dry bitterness on the clean finish. Palate is medium bodied, nice active carbonation. Easy drinking beer. Thanks Chris.

Hazy golden with a large, frothy, white head. Aroma of floral and citrus hops, freshly ground leaves, light malts. Flavor is fully coating and of floral hops, citrus, light grapefruit, and chewy malt. Medium to full bodied with mild carbonation. A pretty tasty IPA.
