For more than 160 years the company has not only created and developed award winning beer, but also served the community of which it forms a part of. It has built sustainable jobs and worked with charities to deliver substantial benefits to people living in the brewery’s area of operations and beyond.
Established in 1849, Joseph Holt Ltd has been managed by its founding family for five generations. Throughout that time the company has been driven by traditions of professionalism, honesty and innovation. So the business, although rooted in the traditional values of a family firm with a reputation built on traditional draft and bottled beer, has always looked to evolve. The most recent developments in that evolution are the Crystal and Diamond range of lagers and the Golden Ale Two Hoots. These products join the collection of award winning lagers and excellent Smooth and Black keg beer.
The brewery has an established pub estate that is carefully managed to ensure that it is focused on growth.

Fresh aroma, quite hoppy. Light, fruity flavour. A bit gassy. A touch of a metallic aftertaste.

Cask @ Abbey Inn, Kinloss.
Light golden colour, medium dense white head.
Aroma is very weak...almost nothing.
Taste light citrus hop, some sweet light biscuit malt, bit of cereal. Very bland and watery.
Palate - low carb, thin, light bitter aftertaste.
Very boring, bland beer. Doesn’t taste bad, just really a nothing beer.

50cl bottle from Sainsburys. Amber with a ring of white head; simple malty aroma; refreshing malty flavour with some honey and some light, grassy hops, giving a slight citrus lift towards the end; but this is soul-less, over-pasteurised, beer.

Bottle at home in London. My first beer of the Sainsburys Beer-O-Rama Party. Pours clear gold with a weak, white head. Mostly malt aroma, definite honey and pasteurization. Light to medium sweet flavor, some white sugar, toasty crackers, slight lemon. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Mild sugary finish, weak malts, very light bitterness of toasted hay. Mediocre.

500ml bottle as part of the Sainsburys beer challenge 2011. Clear glass bottle doesn’t start me with a huge hope for this beer. Clear mid gold colour with lasting thin white head. Pasteurised neutered boiled sweet malt aroma with some vague grassy hop notes. You have to wonder at what the brewery is trying to do with something like this. The pasteurisation makes it a passionless beer. Some ok grassy hop notes try to struggle out of the boiled sweet flavour, but it is truly a shame that brewers still filter and pasteurise. As Cartman would say in South Park, "Lame." Shame as the grassy hop notes could be good.

500ml bottle bought at the Sainsbury’s superstore in Pimlico. The noisy pour reveals a clear amber body with an deep orange glow. Fading white head. Lighter aroma of fruity malts. Malts and bitter fruits mixed together in the taste profile. Herbal hops to the ending. Soft carbonated. Smooth and easy to quaff (hotel room, London 03.08.2011).
