Description
Joseph Holt is a unique brewery: it embodies both traditional values and exceptional brewing. For more than 160 years the company has not only created and developed award winning beer, but also served the community of which it forms a part of. It has built sustainable jobs and worked with charities to deliver substantial benefits to people living in the brewery’s area of operations and beyond.
Established in 1849, Joseph Holt Ltd has been managed by its founding family for five generations. Throughout that time the company has been driven by traditions of professionalism, honesty and innovation. So the business, although rooted in the traditional values of a family firm with a reputation built on traditional draft and bottled beer, has always looked to evolve. The most recent developments in that evolution are the Crystal and Diamond range of lagers and the Golden Ale Two Hoots. These products join the collection of award winning lagers and excellent Smooth and Black keg beer.
The brewery has an established pub estate that is carefully managed to ensure that it is focused on growth.

12 Oct 2011: My 500ml brown bottle was best before 9 Oct, so it’s 3 days too old tonight! The label claims "This nocturnal brew is sure to catch you by surprise. Guaranteed to arouse your Fifth Sense - Taste". Well lets see: I’m about to pour the bottle into a standard UK pint sleeve (a 2002 CAMRA fest one from Boston in the Fens). Good looking brew, clear and bright, an amber colour with an orangey hue: the head was white, but didn’t hang around to be introduced, so it loses a half point. Floral, fruity hop aroma with bicuity malts just below the surface. The taste is crisp, sharp and hoppy, the malts calming it all down after the initial hit of hops. The hops then take over again as the mouth begins to dry. Well balanced, with a hop lead and finish, a fine beer, pity so few have reviewed it.

It requires a good sniff to get the aroma of this balance, crisp ale which feels light. Golden with a creamy head. Medium-high bitterness.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours clear gold with a foamy white head. Looks perfect. Light dough in the nose with wisps of hay. Medium sweet flavor with definite hay and faint, tangy citrus. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with faint bitterness of hay, some lemon and light dough. A touch sweet without the necessary offsetting bitterness, but overall it’s a nice beer.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading] Deep gold, mild lemon and butterscotch in a very, very weak and watery mouthfeel. It grew on me as the lemon flavour intensified in a mildly bitter finish, but didn’t grow enough.

Not an unpleasant aroma, but it’s only very faint. Looks decent enough. I like the taste but there’s not a lot to it. Once it’s out of your mouth the taste is pretty much gone and it doesn’t leave much after it. The taste is nice but the fact that it dissipates so quickly makes it seem a bit bland.
