Description
An independent brewery founded in 1996 and employee owned since 2024, we like to think that we blend creativity and innovation with heritage and tradition, reflecting these values across our beers. Our house style could typically be described as pale and hoppy, but that’s not all we can do! As the beer world has evolved so have we, covering a wide range of styles and continually pushing the boundaries of what we can create.

Tap. Abbeydale Beerworks. Opaque deep coffee dreg brown. Slim dense glossy beige foam. Huge Islay character here. Peat. Phenols. Smoke. Iodine. In fact it just smells of Islay whisky. No real beery notes at all. Taste is vinous and light tart. Some inevitable woody bitterness. Decent body. Definitely doesn’t lack flavour. Vinous phenolic peaty finish. Doesn’t lack in barrel character but Islay isn’t a favourite for me so rated as I find it.

Cask. Abbeydale Beerworks. Light haze on a medium gold. Dense creamy white foam. Looks good. Nose has light piny notes. Some lemon rind. Light dry malt. Taste is light bitter. Some sweetness. Drinks well and is in great nick (as it should be in the brewery tap). Clean bitter finish. Nice golde.

Can. Mitchell’s Wines. Moderate haze on a ginger gold (only Abbeydale would call a beer “Hazy IPA” when it’s not even that hazy). GF swede. In other words it looks shit. So sweet on the nose I’m wondering if it’s oxidised. Loads of ripe fruit. Bit of pine. Bit of mango. Super sweet brioche malts. Taste is sticky sweet with a moderate piny bitterness. Bit heavy on the palate. Bitter finish but the sweetness never gets reigned in enough. Yeah it’s wank, oxidised or not. A sweet heavy mess. I’m off down Abbeydale’s new taproom in a couple of days. Can’t wait…
