Three friends who got to know each other during their education as bioscience engineers in Ghent, joined forces to confirm their passion for beer. The knowledge acquired in the 'Copper Owl' was from then on put to practice. Today Brewery De Landing creates artistic, craft beers for the man on the street as for the true beer connoisseurs.

Light gushing to good, very stable yellowish head over mossy-amber beer. Dry, spicy nose, something of apples, then C-hops, fresh green herbs, exotic fruit. Bitter hoppy flavour, faint exotic fruit with a true hopoil finish. Bit flowery, edible flowers, banana, tad almondy in the finish too. Very creamy & stable head, with extra bitterness, quite slick, medium bodied. Far from bad. I Thanks to Barbara & Tim! /I

Bottle from Deca and drunk at home. Very dark brown beer lasting tan head. Lots of dark brown malts on the aroma. More brown malt in the mouth. Some hop sting on the finish. Doesn’t really go anywhere but it’s fine. Malty. Some sweetness.

Bottle from Deca, Woesten, Flanders, consumed at home Thursday 6th April 2017 Pours reddy amber with a mid sized off white head. The aroma suggests that this will be sweet (and it is) Little bit of banana and toffee, candy sugar and a little spice. Nice, and despite me not realising that I had poured myself a quadruple it’s very drinkable. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5

Bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Quadrupel from De Landing, a beer company started by three bio engineers, who have apparently moved this recipe from Eutropius to Deca now; this rating concerns the Eutropius version, but the label says 10% ABV rather than the 11% mentioned above. Medium thick, pale greyish beige, regular head, quickly dissolving into practically nothing in the middle, but retaining as a firm moussy rim on the edge; lightly hazy, deep brownish bronze colour with reddish burgundy hue. Aroma of warm caramel, candied figs, coriander seed, rum-soaked raisins, brownies, overripe pear, sangria, milk chocolate, cloves, stewed plums, damp earth with a very weak FFF-like touch, raw brown sugar, banana candy, fainter hints of gravy, liquorish, diluted coffee grounds, almond, marmelade, honey liqueur, sweet grapes, soggy brown bread. Fruity onset, lots of banana and pear, sweet with residual brown candi sugar sticking a bit to the teeth but not in an annoying way, something deeply sourish (unripe plum) underneath, spritzy carbonation, minerally, a bit on the sharp side for even this style, full and rounded, smooth, thick and slightly resinous mouthfeel. Full-fledged caramelly malt sweetness in the middle, filling the mouth along with ongoing banana ester and brown sugar sweetness, evolving into an earthy, warming finish combining this sweetness with drying effects of earthy, only mildly bittering hops, quite a lot of soapy coriander and a strong afterglow of rum- or plum liqueur-like alcohol which balances on the brink of wryness in the very end; clove-like phenols adorn this combo in a not too obtrusive way. Earthy yeastiness and residual - not to mention somewhat cloying - sugary sweetness linger after swallowing along with the expected soapy coriander effect. Your typical quadrupel, aiming at the greatness of the holy trappist examples in this style, but not quite getting there: a bit too spritzy, a bit too earthy (FFF) and a bit lacking in complexity. I’ve seen many a beer like this pass by in the past fifteen years and this one does not stand out: all the clichés of the style have been answered, sure, but not in the deepest or most refined way possible. It still passes for me, considering other Eutropius things I have tasted in the past; certainly a decent sipper by itself, but lacking a bit in personality and finesse. Very (if not overly) saturating too, in its combination of alcohol strength, sweetness and relatively high carbonation.
