Description
In mythology, literature and many cultures, the Raven is seen as a culture hero, a revered and benevolent, transformative figure. The Raven helps people, blesses them with gifts and shapes the world. But at the same time, he is a frivolous trickster, a light-hearted prankster who is sometime gluttonous and impatient. The Raven as our totem works perfectly. We like to think we are creative, wise, playful and a bit bird-brained; just like those wacky Ravens.

On tap at WA Winter Beer Festival 2015, pours a dark amber with a very large beige head. Aroma brings out bourbon barrels and toasted candied pecans in good balance. Flavour follows accordingly, with notes of bourbon and vanilla upfront, followed by toasted candied pecans. Really great addition of the pecans in here and really well-executed barrel aging. Excellent.

Draft 6 oz pour at Brouwers Big Wood. 2014 vintage. Pours a clear reddish copper with a fading head. Play dough like aroma and flavor. Weird. Sweet malty finish. Play dough. Seriously. UPDATE: Draft 2016 version, at the brewery. Always fun to compare. Already like it fresh much better. More of a roasted malt character other than the overly sweet bready malt. Hints of dark fruit and vanilla. Slight oak. Toasty finish. Very nice beer here. I don’t know if its this years version, or the fact that its fresh, that makes this so much better. Tasty.

Draft pour schooner at the brewery. Pours a dark copper color with an active fizz head. Bourbon aroma and nothing else. This beer is an alcohol storm. Bourbon comes straight through and is quite overpowering. Nutty background, and slightly buttery. Dry, heated finish with some roasted malt very late. Nutty vanilla. I suppose this fit the rainy winter alright, but damn was this boozy.

bomber. Great nose of chocolate cookies, graham crackers. Black with a pretty tan head. Sweet and creamy, roasty, very bitter. The finish is a bit harsh, body a bit light, but otherwise nice.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours translucent gold with a white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast/spice with a light hint of banana. Med +body. Flavor is very tripel, tho the banana seems to have escaped. Smooth, mildly hoppy, slight hints of kandi. It’s quite subtle. Maybe a trace of heat around tongue edges - tho that might be hop. Really very nice. Nails the style IMHO.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours clear copper with a finely bubble beige head. Aroma is cranberry and mixed hop. And xmas spice. Near med body. Flavor is spice forward; then there’s some cranberry. Then there’s some orange zest. Light malt backbone. So spicy I’m not really getting into hop. Getting a little tongue burn, but that could be spice or zest. Goes down easy. Ratings are probably suffering because this ale isn’t really like anything else IMHO. Spices are nicely done. Zest gets more out front with time.

Draft 14 oz pour at the brewery. Pours a copper red color with a thin ring fizz head. Black cherry, and mixed berry aroma. Surprised on the raspberry. I would have guessed cherry, blackberry, and maybe even blueberry before the raspberry. Nice, growing tartness in the finish, balanced with the sweet fruit. Excellent sour.

Nitro pour pint at the brewery. Thick chocolate milkshake like pour with the nitro cream head. Fresh coffee bean aroma. Flavor is a heavy coffee roast with a semi sweet milk chocolate. Is there coffee in this? Seems like it. Crea. Heavy, espresso finish. I have disliked a notable streak of nitro beers, but this one was fantastic. Best nitro beer I’ve had?? Could be. UPDATE: 2 years later, almost to the day. At Black Raven, again, presented on nitro. Still an amazing porter. Dessert like beer. More chocolate centered this go around, more so than coffee. Great stuff.
