Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

Sample at Daily Growler Powell during the "Land-Grant Collab (The Corsica) Launch + Empanadas Food Truck" event on 01/19/2018. Brown-black color with a medium khaki head that dissipates steadily to a film. Sparse patches of lace. Aroma of roast malt, coconut and coffee. Medium body with flavors of chocolate malt, coconut, vanilla and coffee. The finish is roasty with a malt and coconut aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Pour is a black with a large tan head. Aroma is a mild coffee with an equally mild chocolate and roast. Flavor is again a very mild coffee with some roasted malt and not much else. Everything in this beer was way low key. As a porter this was ok, the adjuncts used did not stand out.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of tan head that lingers. Huge chocolate milk nose with cacao nib and faint coffee. Brownie-like character on the palate. Lots of milk coffee flavors come out as well. Super smooth and rich. Very drinkable with abv hidden well. Probably the best Highland I have had at this point. Great stuff.

On tap at Craft Brewed, pours a deep dark brown / black with a reddish tinge and a small tan head. Aroma brings out notes of cocoa upfront, with a touch of coffee. Flavour is fairly chocolatey, with light coffee undertones. Dry palate, with a lightly sweet and cocoa-y finish. Nicely made.

On tap at Flying Saucer, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out loads of chocolate upfront, with low roast. Flavour is an intense chocolate bomb, with dark chocolate dominating. Low sweetness and low-medium bitterness, with a fairly dry palate. Lots of depth and wonderfully rounded. Excellent.

Bottle from Trader Joe's. Pours a deep brown to black with a small bit of head that dissipates quickly. Big roasty coffee ground nose, slight chicory. Thin on the palate, dark chocolate. Slightly sour. Light lingering coffee roast.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep copper with a small bit of creamy head that lingers. Big vanilla forward nose with caramel, nougat and milk chocolate aromas. Smooth on the palate, sweet but not cloying. Vanilla really stands out in the front, but doesn't completely overwhelm. Nice low abv winter beer. Enjoyable.
