Notes from 1/2/2009. Soggy coaster notes courtesy of ncvbc & bboven. I got the privileged of trying most of Highland's staple lineup between them, yet I only managed to legibly record this one. Poured straight down the middle of a standard lop-sided DFH pint glass. A sturdy inch & change of sandy tan head throwing whipped wavelengths as it regressed. Dusty cocoa, dairy creamer/nougat, bare notion of roast, a petty amount of zest finishing off the nose. A watery anticipation, but it gets stickier as it warms. Everything is on the milder side of mild. Light lactose opening, followed by a very chalky introduction to everything else: sharp & charred caramel, lightly nutty, with an overall mellow roast. Feel is more scratchy or cat tongue-like, then the velvet type of qualities I associate with oatmeal beers. Soothing in a numbing sort of way. Negligible alcohol. A definite dryness on the tail end that consumes the finish & lends itself to more stoutly comparisons(& room for one more bottle).

Can, slight haze on light pale. Bubbly white head. Mild citrus nose of light hop perfume. OK, an IPA at 3.9%? Hey, need some beef to make me forget its an IPA, this ought to be interesting to say the least. First taste is yes, very light, more like a mild APA if you ask me. Sometimes there is this intersecting gray area between APA and session IPA, especially if the session lacks any kind of IPA bitter bite that a well made APA would easily have. I guess the APA should have a bit more malt presence, no? Under 5% and good hop character seems to describe both styles to me, I'm guessing this one may be a little more watery compared to an APA. Goes down pretty easy for me, as an IPA despiser, so we all know this really lacks many of the good characteristics of a decent session IPA. I guess you could call this a refreshing beer, considering its lack of IPA hop flavor and good level of cutting co2 throughout the session.

From a 12 oz can. Pours a clear orange gold with an off white head. Aromas of crackers and dank fruit. Flavors are intensely bitter, in a good way.

Notes from May 2009 Heavy layer of sediment on the bottom, no BB date. Served into my Sly Fox paperweight. A pretty decent pour left the beer just a shakes worth of floaters in suspension. Syrupy, glazed yellow color. Twinge of dulled-out orange on the second, more heavy-handed pour. Thin, white comb-over froth. Smell first malty sweet, turning vine-y & earthy. Very ho-hum. Taste is white bread & a little too much malt at the start, then turning a touch salty & maybe metallic. Half way through a soapy bitterness starts to go at it, eventually becoming very leafy bittergreen that lingers through a drying, papery finish. Not very bitter, but... gasp, pretty balanced. Carbonation is middle/middle high, but the dryness plays a bigger, better part. Get those yeasties in there. It didn't start well, but halfway through it became a pretty decent IPA. This is probably really satisfying super fresh. :)

Single can from Appalachian for $2.38. Born on 12.29.23. Pint glass at home pre hurricane. Dark brown on black, ruby highlights, ample cookie dough head. Stiff alcohol, toffee & coconut oil nose. Bittersweet char, soot, marshmallow, coconut oil. Thin, lightly crispy, slight booziness. Okay to good.
