Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

16 ounce draft at The Dapper Dog. Traditional Oktoberfest all the way through. Flavor of toffee, bread, like malt backbone, very malt spice and the finish. Nice malt hardiness.

Notes from 1/09/2009. Hard drive data scraping is well worth the money, let me tell you. Priceless family photos, rebates & receipts, insurance forms, music, nah... kb after kb of old beer reviews. That's what it's all about. :D Thanks to bboven, whether these beers sit well with me or not. Rounded pint glass. Unusual, lop-sided, dough-colored milky head. Uniform lacing over a dirty amber, chill-hazed, iced tea-like body. Caramel & spicy/tangy orange hop notes. A little dry bread crust & heavier then expected alcohol. Taste isn't as big as the nose suggests. Slightly resinous/rindy hops, honestly in balance with the doughy malty. A lingering spicy citrus sizzles along with the enthusiastic carbonation. Astringency is at a minimum. Easy.

12/19/21 Single from Whole Paycheck. Duvel glass @home. Filled 11/01/21. 5.9% abv. Dense egg cream head. Sticky. Mild malt, bag of cheap candy bars, very very gentle spice. Egg cream, Cola, Milk Duds, faded but lingering bitter spice. Flavors build a bit as it warms, lo-key raisin, peanuts, but who's going to nurse a 5% beer? Gentle, thin, non-demanding, smooth. Might have another.
