Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

Heavy doses of bittersweet chocolate backed up by earthy notes of coconut and a strong java finish. Some vegetal greenness from the coffee on the fade. Decent.

12 oz bottle from John, thanks man, 11/27/23. Clear caramel color. Beige head. Sweet malt and caramel / toffee. Good bit of Holiday spice mix as well. Pretty good mouthfeel. For something full of sweetness and spice, it still has many things nice.

Okay, but light on complexity. Subtle cocoa notes are offset by yeast and apple and a touch of lemon. Finishes with continued yeastiness and a slight Noble bitter streak. Eh.

S&W market tap room. Purty, filtered, autumn gold, sticky head. Can-shaped pint glass. Grainy, slightly sharp, pungent nose. Hairy, coarse malt, very grassy, medium acid, cooked flavor, a bit congealed at the end. Great forced carb, not too slurry-ish. Kinda liked this.

On tap at the S&W market downtown. Hazy, cherry Kool-Aid pour, kinda frothy. Confectionery cherry, disappointing nose. Tart lime, cherry cordial, a little leafy, malic acid, basic kettle sour; vinegary. Meh.

Downtown taproom while planning my next move. Hazy, dark honey gold pour; frothy. Apricot, earthy, sharp rind, maybe garlic on the nose. Muted, bland juicy, black pepper, big acid, grassy bitter, aerosol, salt. Not memorable.

On tap at their downtown tap room. Sort of jellied & not exactly clear honey gold pour. Good froth. Solid orange and dank nose. Taste is half-sour, twangy earth, slight onion, apple, prickly acid, fresh grass. Potent for a 3% beer. Good.
