Bottle. Pours with a hazed copper hued body with an off-white head that fades. Aromas are of caramel and strongly citrusy cascade type hop profile. Lots of specialty malt character, medium to strong ester. Flavors are nutty and toasty, quite watery, a bit astringent, medium caramel. Much less hoppy than the nose. Fuller carbonation over a thin body.

Bottle from Capitol Beer. Pours pretty dark brown with a creamy/foamy light tan head. The aroma is primarily resin/citrus - strongly so. Med body. Flavor is dark malt, citrus and a hint of coffee? Strange, but it seems to have coffee. Who knows what may result when blending occurs? Not I. Finishes much more dry than not, with a lot of bitter hop. Very good drink.

From a bottle. Aroma has a nice orange and tangerine citrus not with some secondary tropical fruit notes. Light roast aroma. Some fresh hop aroma. A touch of fruit esters, but fairly clean. Light alcohol aroma. Pours a dark brown, lighter on the edges but not black. Thin tan head with poor retention; slight film lingers. Flavor has sweet malt notes with a touch of roast and light chocolate notes. As the malt notes recede mid palate you get some nice hop flavors. Good citrus and a touch of pine resin. Medium high bitterness. Light alcohol flavors. Finishes with a bit more roast and chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a touch of silliness. Medium carbonation. Light hop astringency. A touch of stickiness. Medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a nice black IPA. A very nice hop character; doesn’t taste like a hoppy stout, instead a roasty IPA. Could finish a bit drier with slightly less roast. A solid addition to the black IPA scene. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I have enjoyed both of their other beers, but this one was very disjointed. Aroma of ketchup, belgian yeast, perhaps some sour funk going on here -- it tastes intentional, but is not part of the beer description, so i am uncertain. Hops are very muted, although some grass comes out as it warms. Not a whole lot going on here that i liked. A surprising result as both other beers are very tasty.

"California Ivanhoe Organic Whole Hops 8% AAU. 4.6% Beta. The original California Cluster variety has been rejuvenated for the first time in more than a half century. Similar in profile to a Cascade with a moderate alpha in the 8% range, it has a nice aroma with mellow hints of citrus and pine and the strong floral/herbal notes typical of English aroma hops. The exact origins of the Ivanhoe hop are unknown but the original California Cluster hop parent was a cross between English and American varieties. Great for American style ales, California Common, stouts, and IPA’s. Try in recipes that call for: Galena, Cluster, Northern Brewer." Bomber from The Davis Beer Shop. Pours light copper amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is fruity floral over some light malt. There’s a musty aspect. Call it full bodied. It is floral/fruity, but there’s a musty/earthy component so strong this could be taken for a farmhouse ale. It’s fairly lush in the mouth. I suppose there’s grass and citrus, but my mouth is finding enough flavors to not bother with that possibility very much. This is eminently quaffable.
