In 1872, Jules Vanneste bought the ‘t Hamerken distillery. In 1889, he took the step of definitively converting the distillery into a brewery. Soon, ‘t Hamerken top-fermentation beers became a household name in the Bruges area. Brewing continued till 1982.

In 1983, Paul Vanneste (great-grandson of the founder) founded the new De Gouden Boom brewery in collaboration with Frank Boon Brewery from Lembeek. In 1985 Brouwerij De Gouden Boom is granted a licence to brew the STEENBRUGGE abbey beers.

On 16 November 2001, PALM brewery acquired a majority interest in Brouwerij De Gouden Boom and in 2003 it was completely taken over by Palm Brewery. In the same year the Prior of St Peter’s Abbey in Steenbrugge licensed PALM Breweries to brew STEENBRUGGE abbey beers.

Since 2004 production of Bruges beers has been relocated to the PALM Breweries site in Steenhuffel.

Bottle at the Red Lion, Histon. Golden, light and clear. There’s a big white head at first which dissipates quickly. Smells a bit of sweet spice and honey, but for a Tripel there’s not much aroma at all. Balanced bittersweet taste, with a spicy yeasty note up front. Sharp bittering hop in the finish. Heavy carbonation, which works for this beer. Needs more flavour, but I enjoyed it well enough all in all.

Barwa złota, klarowne, piana biała, niezbyt obfita, ale dość trwała. W aromacie nuty fenolowe i estrowe - brzoskwinie, gruszki, trochę nut chlebowych i białego wina. W smaku słodowe, chlebowe, nuty winne, dojrzałych owoców w stylu gruszki i brzoskwiń, ciasteczka. Goryczka średnia, wysycenie i ciało też, ułożone jeśli chodzi o alkohol, pijalne, zbalansowane. Klasyczny Belgijski Blond, bez szału, ale da się wypić.

Golden colour with lasting, fluffy head. Aroma is typically Belgian with its yeastiness. Sweetness from the malt is tempered by a slightly dry and spicy yeast. It’s good that it’s not overly sweet.
