Shared by Tytoanderso. A beer with no carbonation. After nearly 8 years, I wouldn’t expect much. The aroma has light fruit and a little yeast, some molasses there as well. The flavor is surprisingly sour but it doesn’t taste infected. It unfortunately lacks complexity that it probably had at one time, now that the flavors have blended together, but there is still oak, sugar, toffee, port, and fruit. Cloudy brown appearance.

A muddy brown beer with no head. The aroma is oxidized combined with notes of oranges. The flavor is very sweet and very oxidized, combined with notes of metal (from the alcohol) and wood. Sampled August 2006 - and in my opinion definately over the top.

(Bottle 27,5 cl) Pours an unclean, muddy brown with the tiniest, off-white head. Completely flat. Vinous and very alcoholic sherry like nose. Medium-bodied with lots of caramel and oak and overripe fruit. Ends on an alcoholic bitterness. Very subdued bitterness. An experience indeed. 290806

Bottle, 275ml, corked. 2004 vintage. A more or less clear, copper colored beer completely without head. Oxidation, some sourish notes, caramel, dried fruits and some vinegar notes in the aroma. The flavor also has a tiny sourish touch, along with caramel, dried fruits and some alcohol. Full-bodied and slightly warming. Caramel, dried fruits and some alcohol in the finish. I’ve had better, longer cellared bottles of this one, but it was quite drinkable anyway. Rating: 6-3-6-4-13-3.2. (090327)

Cask at Copenhagen Beerfestival. 2005 vintage. It pours a hazy, golden body without head. Not bubbles either. The aroma is fruity and vinegary, with some sweetish impression too. Dried fruits and alcohol in the background. The flavor is sourish and fruitysweet with an astringent vinegary sting. Dried fruits. Dryish, medium to full mouthfeel. Short finish with sourness, some sweet fruityness and alcohol warmth. Quite nice, but not top notch. Rating: 7-3-7-3-14-3.4. (090515)

Bottled. (From Gales Brewery) Clear, dark ruby color and neither head nor carbonation. Not that I expected it either, as the bottle was sampled at Kulminator, which had stored it since 1982. Lightly sour and vinous aroma with alcohol and berries. Sweet flavor with some alcohol, mould, cellar, stock and roasted malt. Sweet, lightly sticky and medium mouthfeel. It certainly cellars well, and the alcohol stays, even after almost 25 years. Will rerate with a fresher bottled in the future. (060714)

Bottle. Amber colour with a small off-white head. Sweet malty vinous aroma, with some fruity hints. Malty bitter flavor with fruity hints. Malty dry bitter and warming aftertaste.

Bottle. 2003 vintage. Hazy amber colour with almost no head. Malty aroma with some fruitiness. Malty fruity flavor with hints of raisins. Long fruity aftertaste.

100th rater, woohoo. 2001 bottle, been in the fridge only for 2 months or so. Poured into a Chimay goblet with no head or carbonation, Color is dark copper but translucent, can see through the beer. The aroma is still really strong. I mean too out of control. Sure barley wines are given some slack but this one is obviously just too much. Get that alcoholoic sweetness but in a cheap, uncultured manner. The body is very thin, especially for a BW. The taste is a little off-putting. I would not say it would get better wiht age because is nothing to subside or mellow, just not tasty. Barely any feel to the beer at all.

3 1/2 yr old sample Dark amber-chestnut, nearly no head. Rich, fruitcake, malts & raisins nose, fusels & esters à volonté , some oxydation. Sweetish, with chocolate, Madeira and portwine, in the best possible way; vinous and brandy-ish. Rich velvety MF, going to syrupy. Aftertaste molded by the restsugars. A very satisfying old ale - I wouldn’t have thought the Queen had aged herself all that well...
