Description
Carlson Orchards was founded in 1936 by Walter and Eleanor Carlson. In the thirties and forties, they made their living from a diversified farm of chickens, cows, potatoes and apples. In the late sixties, the farm specialized in fruits with apples being the main crop. The Carlsons are dedicated to growing the best tree fruits, blueberries, raspberries, and pumpkins.

Carlson Orchards now grows fruit on 100 acres producing:

30,000 bushels of apples
5,000 baskets of peaches and nectarines
50 year old blueberry patch
Raspberries
Sweet cherries
Today Bruce, Frank and Robert Carlson, the three proud sons of Walter & Eleanor, are dedicated to maintaining their family’s fine reputation and the great tradition of high quality apple and apple products that was born over 83 years ago.

The Carlson Family has been making fresh apple cider for about as long as they’ve had apples to pick. But when the cider business outgrew what the orchard could handle, the Carlson brothers turned to New England Apple Products, a trusted, local family company with over 150 years of cider making experience, to press and bottle the orchard’s fresh, sweet apple cider. Steve and Dave Rowse of New England Apple Products moved the cider operation to Leominster, Massachusetts (3 miles from Johnny Appleseed’s birthplace!), where the Rowse brothers continue the same high level of care and quality for pressing and bottling Carlson’s sweet cider.

All of our sweet cider is made from only the freshest apples available and is:

100% real apples
All-natural and pasteurized
Made with no preservatives or additives
Naturally sweet, with no added sugar
Flash pasteurization of our cider enables us to continue to produce and sell the highest quality of apple cider. When you see the Carlson Orchards label, you can be sure that it’s the same delicious, high-quality cider that you and your family have come to know and love. Our products are sold and distributed to many large and small food stores, restaurants, farm stands, and other locations across New England.

Can, best before 5/28/2027, drunk 8/8/2026.
Does smell dry, at least. But not bone dry or too tannic, showing fruity, lightly pulpy apple and reasonable acidity. Very clean and neat. Not overly complex or much in the way of an actual farmhouse cider.
Actually not very dry in the flavor, though not problematically sweet (not something I'd want to drink more than a pint of, though). Clean enough, with tannin/skin and soft, lightly sweet juiciness. Low complexity and no interesting yeast notes be it wild or otherwise. True to the brewery, safe and more geared towards a larger audience.

Cidery draught, 7/25/26.
Not really getting oak in the nose. Maybe a touch of spirit. The base cider comes through nicely and Legacy is one of their better ones, IMHO. Excellent balance of acidity and sugar.
In the mouth it opens up as Legacy, but transitions in to a touch of oak followed by a rather raw, grainy, sharp, glue-like spirit character. Not sure what's going on here, but it's unpleasant and ruins the base. Dumped out most of my pint.

Draught at the cidery, 7/25/26. 2nd from right.
Not much of a nose. Some very light apple skin, very mild spice.
Fully attenuated in the mouth. There's zero sugar and very little body here. Hard to get an impression of the apple given that they've completely ripped through it in fermentation. Tannin, skin, mild spice, bitter crabapple flesh-type notes.

Continuing right on from the Harvard Harvest, this one doesn't miss a beat in pumping you full of ginger. It smells great, if you love ginger, but other than some sweet apple sugar, there's not much else here.
Same in the mouth. Ginger, ginger and more ginger. Sweetish cider; not cloying. Mostly ginger, though the ginger itself is delicious.

Whew, they are not subtle with their adjunct additions! They smell good and aren't astringent, but they only allow some sweet apple sugars to break through on the end.
Same for the flavor. Bolstered by a sweet base, the cider is at least balanced in a sweet/dry sense, but is very heavy-handed with the spice. Drinkable in a dessert/comforting way, but not something of which I would want much.

Draught at the cidery, 7/25/26. Far left.
Nose is actually quite lovely and surprisingly very aromatic. Though if this is their flagship, then maybe they are putting more effort and refinement in to it than their other ciders.
Flavor is sweet, though not sickly-so. Certainly not going to confuse this for some rustic, artisanal, farmhouse cider, but for a flagship that needs to appeal to the masses, you could do a lot worse. No off flavors. Easy enough to drink.

Draught at Lilac Hedge Farm, 5/29/26.
Lovely aromatics with crisp and floral apple notes, lots of skin and light tannin. Clean with no excessive sugar. Not getting the honey in the nose, which is great.
Sweeter in the mouth, though, and it just tastes sugary, not necessarily of honey. A shame they feel the need to sweeten it. Cider gets lost in the sweetness, unfortunately. Round, soft, slick mouthfeel.

Canned March 2025, drunk 7/4/25.
Clear, deep bronze-golden.
Nose is pretty respectable mix of tart, woody, tannic apple and a bit of some sweeter, brighter, lighter ones. Clean Sacch. yeast with no excess sugar or weird notes.
Fleshy, juicy, sweet at first but drying out with some invigorating tartness, woodiness and tannin. A good mix of sweet and dry and pretty respectable stuff for a normally very commercially-minded cidery.

Pint at a pizza place in Bar Harbor with my wife. Opaque, pale orange, lingering froth. Sweet, prickly tart nose, a touch soapy & grassy. Sweet, condensed, applesauce, fresh eating apples, nice tartness, probably back-sweetened, barely fermented, force carb. No sulfite headache. Slight malt trash boozy bite on the very tail once it started to get warm. Quaffable with a buffalo chicken beer when ice cold. Cheers.

Can on hot afternoon Friday. Pale purple rather clear and few bubbles. Nose is blueberry and lavender. The apple is subdued more blueberry juice with the lavender. Pleasant little brunch drink
