Description
Founded by Brian Rides and Ray Penny in 1990 in a former cooperage of the former Arnold, Perrett & Co. Ltd premises. In 2004, they moved into a new 50-barrel brewery in the old Arnold, Perrett brewhouse itself. In 2017, they acquired Mole's Brewery (and its pub estate). In 2021 the brewery closed and the brewing equipment was sold off. The pub estate became the Wickwar Wessex Pub Company, a Bristol based pub and brands business dating back to the dawn of the millennium. The beer range is contract-brewed at Butcombe Brewery.

Bottle. This was drunk straight after a bottle of Mr Perrett’s traditional stout from the same brewery, and the two were virtually the same in both taste and appearance. Near black in colour, the aroma was of roasted malt and dark chocolate. The flavours included dark fruit and coffee [3.3]. Good. Re-rate: Cask-conditioned at the White Lion, Bristol 23/1/08. This had a lot more going for it than the bottled version. Aromas of blackcurrants, dark chocolate and some subtle hops. The flavour had more fruit, some roasted notes and a decent bitter finish. Excellent [3.8]

Bottled. Near black with a firm, tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate with roasted malt. Flavour was of liquorice, dark fruits and some treacle. Pretty good.

Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar JDW, Bristol, December 2006. This didn’t strike me as a winter beer, it was more a standard bitter. Competent enough and well balanced in aroma and flavour, but not memorable.

I haven’t seen this beer in a long time and there is no reference to it on the Wickwar website, so I suspect it may be retired. All I can remember about it is that it wasn’t memorable when served in Bristol pubs. A slightly malty bitter, but there are numerous better examples of the style.

Cask-conditioned at the White Lion, Bristol. This beer struck me as similar, but inferior to, Uley Old Spot. Dark ruby brown with a slight head. Aroma was of dark fruit and malt. Flavour was of raisins, toffee and a touch of marzipan. Drinkable stuff.

Cask conditioned at the White Lion, Bristol. An amber bitter with slight head. Aroma of slight sweet malt with a touch of hops. Flavour was ever so slightly citrussy with a touch of caramel and a bitter finish. Acceptable session beer.

Cask conditioned at the White Lion, Bristol. Near black colour with a minimal head. A bit of red fruit and roasted barley aroma followed by a rather thin flavour. Just about ok.

Cask handpull at Willow Walk, JDW, Victoria. Decent hoppy finish, good condition, good wideish mouthfeel on this light English bitter. Excellent lacing. Very light bitter, but lemon citrus is good.

a ruby coloured ale, with a fruity malt nose and a sweet malt fruit flavour that sinks easily

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2007. Black beer with ruby edges, bubbly beige head. Liquorice stout aroma. Very liquorice/molasses flavour in mouth. Actually pretty good as it opens up. Still a little bit oily and tarry for me.
