Description
Barney’s started brewing at Summerhall in July 2012 in time to supply the venue’s Royal Dick Bar for the Fringe, but Barney himself began brewing aged 16 as a brewery apprentice. After bagging a first class degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University and packing in a high flying career promoting rum and whisky around the world, Barney decided it was high time he started to brew his own beer.
In doing so, his immaculate microbrewery has injected new life into Edinburgh’s brewing history, not least because he’s chosen to resurrect a brewery at Summerhall where beer has been brewed off and on for three centuries.

19/6/2021. Can from Beers Without Borders, Dumfries. Pours hazy very pale orange with a short lasting white head. Starts with a big sherbet hit, which calms down quite quickly, allowing apricot and peach to come through. Initial big sour hit also fades with allowing a nicely balanced sweetness to develop. Moderate body, a little watery, stays quite fizzy throughout. Quite enjoyable.

Can from Aldi, Inverurie. It pours ever so slightly hazy bright red with a decent frothy white head. The aroma is wheat crackers, bready, cereal, nuttiness, then it softens and sweetens to ripe raspberry, jam and some lemon zing. The taste is crisp, dry and puckering upfront from a lingering lemony zing, tart raspberry, mellow citrus acidity, minerality, cracker, wheat crackers, straw and dull grass. Finish is firmly dry. Light body and moderate, fizzy carbonation. Not nearly as sweet as the snout suggests. Crisp and quenching.
