Description
After a great reception from his hobby as an enthusiastic amateur brewer, Toby Mackenzie and his wife Caroline decided to expand and go full time establishing the award winning Red Willow brewery in 2010. Their aim was to make the types of beer that they like - full of flavour yet easy to drink. Red Willow now offer a range of beers that can be found in many local pubs and shops in cask

On gravity at the Three Tuns, Bristol 29/04/2012. Near black with a decent, off-white head. Roast malt, dark fruit and chocolate aroma. Flavour had more chocolate, black coffee and a dry finish. Chipotles failed to register. Good.

Bottle from Utobeer, Boro’ Mkt, London. A hazy dark golden/orange coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Intriguing aroma of tropical fruit, caramel and malt. Tastes slightly bitter, caramel, distinct grapefruit, malty, some spice. My first beer from Red Willow and it was pretty good stuff.

Bottle from Luvians Bottle Shop, St. Andrews
Very dark brown, ruby edges on glass, off white frothy tan head, good lacing
Aroma Citrus grapefruit, soft fruits - light orange, slight resin, background of soft roasted malt...quite light aroma
Taste Lots of grassy hops, citrus hops, bitter bit sour grapefruit, bitter lemon zest, some bitter deep roasted malts, soft espresso coffee, some burnt notes, seems lower than 7.4%
Palate Medium carb, medium body, zesty tangy palate. Finish of bitter darkroast and grassy hops, touch of pine with some citrus bitter zest. More of the bitter roast and bitterness of the hops comes through in the finish with a very slight saltiness in the linger.
Overall - More emphasis on bitter hops and roast in the BIPA than rich dark malts and fruits. I prefer more fruitiness and rich dark malts. Not the best BIPA for me, but it’s still pretty good - shows what a range of flavours is possible in this style

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Opaque black with a tiny tan head. A bit flat condition wise. Aroma of roasted malts and plan chocolate. Flavour was sweet, with more chocolate, some coffee and a dryish finish. Fine, but lacking a certain oomph.

Re-rate from keg at the Red Squirrel. Really very bland on keg in nose and taste. Very few high notes. In this version would give a straight 3.0 so average and benefit of the doubt given. Previous rating on 08.04.12 from a 50cl bottle. 6+5+6+4+14 = 3.5 Pours amber to brown with a nicely proportioned creamy head. The nose has oranges and apricots with a creamy background. The taste has mandarins and a burnt rubber and citrus pith finish. The palate has a medium bodied, nice creamy texture and a dry clean finish - slightly astringent for me! Overall, good beer and nice to see it’s bottle conditioned!
