Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.

We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.

In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

Bottle. Dark brown with a light beige head that lasts quite well. Really not much aroma at all - some kumquats, grapefruit, pine, dark bread, licorice. 5 Oily, lowish carbonation. Bitter tenor register citrus, licorice, blackcurrants, black bread. Very bitter at the end. A bit confused by this one.

Pours black with a large head.Nose shows burnt rubber and bandaids as well a a solvent-like alcohol note and some soft roasted malt.Unfortunately the flavours carry on in the same way. More metho and medicinal notes, nail polish remover, burnt rubber and solvent-like booze. Hard to get an idea of what the base beer is meant to taste like with all the off-flavours.

From a 18/1/2016. Pours a deep amber with a big head. has a light but distinct aroma of coffee. Coffee is the most prominent flavour, but there’s also some pleasant sweet caramel malt and citrus and stone fruit, with a mild bitterness at the back. Full bodied with softish carbonation. I don’t recall having a coffee beer outside of a stout, but this actually works rather well. I’m sampling this with a bit of a cold, so might be even more to it than I’m presently detecting.

(Bottle) Clear mid brown, tiniest off-white head. Subtle aroma - hint of nuts. Light body with rather fizzy carbonation. Pleasant taste - nuts and caramel, notes of seaweed and candy / bubblegum. Pleasant enough, not special.

Bottle. Clear golden amber with an off white head that fades to less then a coat. Aroma of flowers, vanilla, funky grapes, mandarins, some boiling egg which I didn’t mind quite so much until I decided what it was. Low carbonation. The sulfurous thing doesn’t really carry through to the taste at all, which is sweet, grainy and fruity with a tart touch of moldering grapes and a fairly dry and slightly spiced finish. And after a time the sulfur dissipates, but it’s living a life that it can’t leave behind. Suggest decanting this (or less trendily, letting it sit for a while) if you have one.

Bottle, 8C. Amber with an off-white head. Aroma of toffee, spices, some nuts, grass. Light bodied with quite high carbonation. Toffee and biscuity malt but it’s not got much sweetness and combined with the high carbonation it seems to make the spiciness jut out a bit much for me. Comes together a bit more as it warms a bit.

Bottle, 11C. Just hazy gold with a white head. Lemon and grapefruit aroma. Light bodied. Some hay and crackery pale malt, lots of citrus that’s more juicy than zesty, gooseberries, some pine needles. Moderate bitterness but it rings through because there’s not much else. Very refreshing.
