Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.
We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.
In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

From a 500ml bottle on 3/5/2015 (shared with Butz). Pours a deep brown with a small to medium head. The nose is a bit odd given the nature of the beer - dark fruit, red wine and a touch of vinegar. Flavour wise, there’s a lots of dark chocolate, some dark fruit, and a dash of chilli. Full bodied and average to lively carbonation. Okay but I’m not the biggest fan of chilli beers.

Bottle, 10C. Just caught it as it began to gush. Clear gold with a good coat of white head. Funky aroma with apricots and their stones, pears, damp hay, lemons, hard to place spices. Moderate carbonation. Sweet hay and stone fruit, zesty and a bit bretty - (again) quite Orvalish - , spices, some minerals. A bit pineapple astringent at the end with strange spices and moderate bitterness. Interesting and very lovely indeed.

Bottle. Clear amber with a small white head that lasts very well as a coat. Aroma has is fruity with pears, tropical bubblegum, grass, herbs. A little caramel too. Unusual. Light bodied, lowish carbonation. The taste is quite odd - like there’s a bitter’s malt but with spicy yeast overtones and a jumble of fruit. Peppery and herbal at the end. Perfectly well made, but none of the parts seem to fit well with any of the others.

330 ml bottle into glass. Subtle hop nose with tiny malt note. Looks like caramel fudge with an off white head. Opaque, so I can’t see any bubbles. Medium body, nicely bitter. Aftertaste is really well balanced, subtle creamy bitterness, a little toffee then very late lasting bitterness. Very nice.

330ml bottle into glass. Malty, lightly smoked nose. Pours with an exuberant off-white head with quickly calms down to soapy film. Beer is hazy copper coloured. Medium body with chalky mouth feel, lightly sweet. Finish is sweet with a little bitterness, increasing to a touch of caramel. Nice.

From a 500ml bottle on 5/2/2015. Pours near black with a small to medium head. Has a roasty aroma with brown sugar and chocolate, along with a hint of dark fruit. The flavour is intense, with lots of espresso, milk and dark chocolate, brown sugar and molasses. While there’s a lot of sweetness up front, there’s a big, quite sharp, slightly chemical bitterness which leaves the biggest impression. Has a texture just short of creamy and the carbonation is a touch above average. I’m in two minds about this. There’s a lot to really like about it - lots of flavour and complexity. But the bitterness is just a touch too harsh, which detracts from the overall harmony of the brew. Close to being very good, but doesn’t quite get the cigar.

From a 330ml bottle on 26/1/2015. Pours a moderately cloudy medium golden with the barest of heads.Has a light fruity nose with some yeast in the mix. Take a sip and there’s some sweet stone fruit (apricot) with a firm, slightly salty, dry bitterness coming over the top. Has a light body and lowish carbonation. On the first sip, I didn’t think much of it, but it really grew on me as is warmed up and went down. A bit rough but pretty decent.

Bottle. When it said Belgian Red on the bottle, I was expecting Flemish Red, but nuh. Reddish amber with a cream head that retreats to the rim after a time. Aroma is earthy, spicy and bready with some dried and stewed fruit, caramelized banana. 7+ Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Earthy toasted malt sweet and fruity - raisins, dried banana, apples - with lots of spices - mace, pepper - at the end. Hard to believe it’s 8.1%. At the end it’s just dry and bitter enough to lift away the richness and make it more swiggable that it ought to be. Vibrant fruit and spices which I’d guess will fade quickly. Rollicking.
