Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.

We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.

In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

This keg version is force carbonated and 14.2% ABV. Brown with a rim and island beige head. Aroma of toffee an array of dried fruit, wood, as much Sherry as Port. No obvious booze in the aroma. But there is in the taste, particularly at the end. More than medium bodied but lighter than I’d expect. Not a lot of it here, but I think I’d miss the carbonation. Lots of toffee, dried fruit, mild spices, some Port notes. Some bitterness along with obvious but not hot alcohol help lift away the sweetness. It’s big, tasty and everything’s under control. But there’s no great depth or magic.

Growler. Rose gold with a small off white head. Spiced caramel aroma with Port poached pears, apricots. Medium bodied with firm toffee and Port flavours but not a lot of sweetness. Intense herbal and woody spices at the end with modest bitterness and a suggestion of sourness. I thought Lapin disjointed and whilst things pop in and out of prominence here (the Port, the spices, the wood) it all hangs together rather better. Interesting as usual.

Bottle thanks Mr Pink at the 2016 Cotteridge Convention. It pours cloudy orange with a decent white head. The aroma is bitter – sweet, sticky, apricot, grainy, oily, candy, cereal and some porridge. The taste is crisp, bitter, orange peel, peach, grapefruit, slightly grainy feel and some soap. Medium body and fine carbonation. Decent enough, but it is a touch soapy in my opinion.

Bottle shared at the Cotteridge Convention - 2016 edition. Many thanks to Mr. Pink! Pours quite murky orange-gold with a creamy, white head. The nose holds bright citrus fruits, some tangerine, grapefruit. Light-medium sweet flavour, with pale bread, melon, more tangerine. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Pleasant hoppy finish, somewhat juicy, with plenty more citrus character. Good beer.

Bottle as a gift. Pale Amber colour, white head. Citrus hop aroma balanced with a light bitter finish, makes this a very drinkable beer the alcohol level isn’t noticed in this one. Nice.
