Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.

We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.

In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

Part of my 2013 backlog, and brought back from oz by family. Colour is black with a small head. Aroma has chocolate, fruit, and deep caramel. The taste has these too with roasted malt.

Bottle. Amber with a large white head that lasts well. Aroma of damp hay, lime, pepper, guava (although I might have guessed mango), coriander 7+. High carbonation. Some tropical fruit, peach and hay, but fairly dry with a dry spicy finish. Moderate funk lurks a little far in the background. Tried a taster of this on tap a while ago and the lime and stinky fruit were much more prominent - now the flavours seem more integrated and it’s not half as wacky as it sounds - tastes like a mildly funky saison with some minor distractions. Very dry and a bit astringent at the end, lots of coriander. Fruit comes out a little more as it warms.

Bottle. Dark brown with an inch of tan head that lasts and laces well. Earthy and quite dry-seeming aroma of mocha, prunes, darkish sugars, pine twigs. Silky mouthfeel, lowish carbonation. Wouldn’t guess 10% - lacks a bit of depth and presence for something this strong. Sweet with molasses, lots of light-roasted coffee, not much fruit, quite bitter, unusual twiggy pine note. I like Baltic porter with lots of hops, but this is a tidge much - or maybe it’s just that it’s a new (to me) and distinctive hop.
