Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.

We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.

In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

Bottle. Poured a almost white color with no head to speak of. Funky, weird sour notes. Flavor is sour, funky. Better than the flavor. Light and easy to drink for the abv.

Bottled. Hazy pale amber, no head. Funky wood aroma. Mid sweet with medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Lots of wood, some fruit and white pepper. Mid bitter finish.

Bottle, 12C. Unclear gold with no head. Low to very low carbonation. Aroma of herbal lemon, honeyed hay, elderflowers. Sweet hay, lemon juice and zest, herbs. Very gentle sourness, mild funky notes come through right at the end. Like a (cold) mellow version of a whisky toddy.

Bottle, 10C. Pale amber with a small white head that doesn’t hang around long. Gentle aroma of oranges and passionfruit, toast. Fairly low carbonation. Toasty sweetness, strong lingering bitterness tinged with grapefruit, pine, bitter oranges. Get the feeling this was supposed to have more zip to the aroma, but I like the way the big bitter finish manages to be sunny rather than harsh.

Pours yellow with a non-existent head.Nose shows elderflower, doughy yeast, lemon and peach. Very acidic-smelling.Flavours include lemon, sour plums, some savoury and cheesy notes. Incredibly acidic.Could use some more carbonation.

Bottle. Amber with a small off-white head. Fruity aroma with peach, lychees, passionfruit, orange blossoms - all very orchardy, not zesty. Lowish carbonation. Taste is very fruity with some hay and grass. No caramel, no biscuit, hooray. Oranges and a touch of grapefruit more prominent at the end, with peach and tropical fruit. Peppery and floral notes linger in the dry, fairly bitter finish. Not usually a big wrap for galaxy by itself, but this is very fine.

Bottle. Almost clear yellow, no head at all. Pleasantish but mostly unbeerlike aroma with honey, apricots, zataar, orange, a hint of corruption. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Sour damp grain with dried apricot and honey sweetness, Meyer lemon, middle eastern spices. Good. Intriguing but not particularly confronting. Could it really be 9.6%? After RA #4, wasn’t sure whether I was still on board with Red Duck’s crazier offerings. But oh, yes.

Bottle. Gold with a white head that’s a coat soonish. Intriguing dusty and earthy aroma with herbal and citrus notes, nectarines, flowers. Fairly light-bodied, moderate carbonation that’s about perfect for me. Sweet stone fruit, a little wheaty, mild tartness, dry and peppery at the slightly bitter end. Perfumey orange leaves, white pepper and a little Sichuan pepper linger. Right up my street.

Bottle, 11C. Murky brown. Some bubbles, no head. Confronting aroma of sour plums, lemons, boot polish, singed grain, mint, spices, mud. Interesting, but there’s an offensive muddy note in there that I couldn’t get past. Slightly slippery. Taste is sour but not that tart, with plums and dried fruit softening things. Woody spices are a bit tingly at the end. Sediment looks like iced coffee and I’m not brave enough to taste it. Bold stuff, not quite right.

Bottle, 12C. Reddish amber with an off white head that lasts OK. Aroma of toffee, raisins, stewed fruits, grass. A little sticky, low carbonation. Fat caramel, stewed fruit, mixed peel. Fairly strong bitterness, some spices at the end along with nagging pithy citrus. Rather unwelcoming.
