Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

On tap at Bellwoods, pours a clear pale yellow with a small white head. Aroma has notes of straw and watery toasted malt. Flavour is clean, with lots of mineraly notes, straw, and lightly bitter crispness on the finish. Clean and drinkable but very boring.

On tap at Beertown - Toronto, pours a clear pale golden with a medium white head. Aroma has plenty of unfermented wort, grassiness, straw, and biscuity malt. Flavour is much the same, bready notes, and subdued notes. Too much unfermented wort. Needs tweaking.

A deep dark stout with a very thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, alcohol warmth, light nutella, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, nutella, licorice, woody notes, alcohol warmth, very nice and rich. On tap at L'autre oeil.

Small, disappearing transparant to white head over fully hazy yellow-golden beer. Bretts jumping out of the glass, thistles, straw, hay, earthy, bit of peanuts. Bretts - all kinds - and quite lemony flavour. Bit floral, spicy leaves, moldy lemonpeel. Light body, refreshing, well-carbonated. Nice Brett beer, even when not the top in its category.

Dark brown. No head. Pours fairly rich, the aroma has cognac. There's a nice little umami character, blackstrap, oh that's nice cognac character. Good body. That cognac fruitiness, that's really nice. Dark sugars...it's mostly just those two elements. But they are really good.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Black with minimal tan head. Burnt molasses, soft cognac in the background, hint of roast malt. Comes together nicely. I see, now, why I enjoy the double barrel versions as much as I do (first time trying the base).
