Grimm Artisanal Ales is a Brooklyn-based brewery founded in 2013 by Joe and Lauren Grimm after nearly a decade of tinkering with fermentation. Grimm specializes in concise, elegant ales epitomizing the creative, experimental spirit of the American artisanal beer revolution. With each limited edition release, we seek to push the boundaries of style and flavor in order to create beers with the utmost depth and complexity.
For five years, Grimm operated as a nomadic brewery. Joe and Lauren would develop each recipe in the kitchen of their Gowanus apartment and travel to existing breweries near and far to craft their commercial beers.

Bottle from Tavour: pours light purple with a light pink head. Aroma is grapey, winey, woody, lightly funky. Taste is lightly tart, somewhat funky. Nice aftertaste.

Can - Gotta admit that I have been impressed with Grimm's take on this style - like the others I've had, it is more dry and bitter than you'd expect with the style, tracking more like a traditional IIPA than a hazy while still being distinctly hazy, if that makes any sense at all - lot of citrus, grass, spiciness - finish comes off a little watery and a touch catty, but otherwise another solid one.

Dark brown. Aroma is nice, refined bourbon and rich chocolate, little bit nutty. On the palate, good body, chocolate forward, again decent bourbon character. Nutty, toasty, with a rich dark sugar character.

Bright, palish red colour. If you poured me a cab sauv that looked like that I’d send it back. Tart, nice barrel, relatively clean ferm, and the cab sauv flavour comes out but without the intensity of the good ones…a good showcase of hybrid beer-wine for doing a toned down cab that’s still tasty.

Pale pink, thick head. Tart, a touch of saline in the finish rounds it out so well, the floral notes are restrained, the oak helps dry it out. Everything really comes together beautifully in this one.

Dark amber, a bit cloudy, the aroma is raisiny, nice bourbon, alcohol and big fruit. Full body, nice base, treatment is robust but balanced, this is excellent.

Oh man, what a series. Love, love, love the nose here. The adjuncts are there, but not overdone and the sour cultures are poignant but not too acidic. Oak in the very background, but no overt tannin or strong wood character. Just a fruity, juicy, tart, rich BA sour in a compact, approachable vessel.
More oak and chardonnay in the flavor than the nose. Notes of rich, juicy peach alternate with buttery, vanilla-rich oak and Chardonnay character. Tartness up front and through the middle, but rounding/tapering heavily and leaving a soft, heavy vanilla character. Almost would guess there is vanilla added. Very malty, too. This is a great compromise between kettle sours and full-on sour BA beers. Sadly the state of beer needs something like this to reenergize real sours, as BA sours are just completely dead in the water.

Panda thanks to Cloin. A mild haze on this gold beer, small bubbly off white head. Light palate, semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Thin bodied pale malts, a thin and over cooked sweetness. Hops bring thin but juicy citrus, a little ripe. Something vaguely estery going on. Thin dry finish. Hop delivery is decent, everything else I found annoying.

Aromas are dark malt, toast and a hint of molasses. Flavors are similar to nose with an added just right measure of vanilla. Very well balanced. Ditto with bitter, sweet and carbonation. Or touch of astringency. Really nice.
