Description
The Brewery of Saint Mars of the Desert was inspired by the earliest “craft breweries” of Europe: that first generation making beers in disused 19th century breweries with a pioneering spirit, unmoving passion and an almost avant-garde creativity. We relocated from America to the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire to make this dream a reality and haven’t looked back.
As a very small two-and-a-half person brewery, making world class beers and sharing them fresh with the public is about all we have time for. But who needs more than that?

Can picked up at the brewery. Also many pours on site. Rating based off the can though. Clear light to medium gold. Slim dense lasting white foam. Slightly leggy. Looks boss. Nose has sweet maple smoked bacon. That’s it. I’ve nailed it innit. Despite what the blurb says this is pretty sweet overall, with an underlying leafy hop bitterness. Smooth and impressively easy drinking at the ABV. Fine foamy carbonation. Bittersweet finish with more of the maple syrup thing throughout. Good gear. Bonkers, in fact but it’s nothing like the description.

Bottle (obvs) picked up at the brewery. It’s a short while since this was packaged and it’s somewhat livelier now. Foam peeks out from the bottle and produces a thick noisy white head. Settles pretty quickly. Sits hazed pale gold in the glass. Nose has sweet tea loaf. Belgian yeast shizzle. Herbal hop comes across almost minty. Sweet lemon verbena. Taste has the fruity tea loaf sweetness first off. Gets leafy herbal and floral bitter. Lots of bitter punch throughout. Lots of body too tempered by a high-ish foamy carbonation. Flicker of astringency before a lengthy bitter finish. Lively boy.

Silver bullet courtesy of Dann. Cheers! Also very many pours down SMOD. Rate based on the can though. Faint haze on a medium gold. Fairly loose white foam stays the course admirably. Nose has pungent leafy peppery hop. An almost rye like malt character. Light sourness. Taste has a brief granary bread sweetness with a hefty poke of spicy leafy peppery hop bitterness. Decent body for the relatively low ABV. Fine brisk carbonation. More of the leafy bitterness to finish.

Can picked up at the brewery. As well as very many pours on site. Moderate haze on a medium gold. Glossy messy lasting semi lacing white foam. I’m rating this can rather than the beer on tap and there’s a difference. Anyhoo. Nose has sappy pine. Leafy hop. Citrus peel. Touch of savoury sage like herb. Clean dry malts. Taste is pretty dry throughout with a whisper of malty sweetness. Big hit of pithy citrus bitterness. Clean and dry on the palate. There’s no joose sweetness happening here. Fine brisk carbonation. Dry and pithy finish. This ain’t appealing to your juicy kids this. Mesters beer. Btw the draft version is foamier and brighter and lighter on the palate.

Can from Against The Grain. Hazy golden body with a thick off-white head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of tangerine, salted bread and straw. Flavour of peach and salted orange. Medium body with a smooth texture. Light fizz. An interesting, nourishing IPA.

Can courtesy of Dann. Cheers. He reckons this is the best lager he’s made yet. I’m inclined to agree. Light haze on a glowing orange gold. Dense just of white glossy foam settles to a tight thin film. Some legs. Stays the course. Looks boss. Nose has stunning balance with sweet creamy malt, with a tiny hint of savoury (I don’t know if there’s smoked malt in this), and pops of bright, peppery lemony just rained on grassy hop leaf. Taste has unreal balance of the creamy malt sweetness and layers of crisp, grassy, slightly earthy clean and mineraly bitterness. It’s bittersweet throughout and extremely refreshing and moreish. More creaminess on the palate but feels clean crisp and refreshing with fine brisk carbonation. It’s all bitterness on the finish bar a semi drying close. Holy balls this is good logger bier.

440ml can at 3.4% this year (2024), hops are Amarillo, Ekuanot and Citra so they've got rid of the Euro hops not sure this is enough to warrant a new entry. Hazy golden, white head. Aroma of tropical fruits and lightly candied/bubblegum citrus. Taste of zesty citrus, pine, grapefruit, mango, grassy, bitter. Medium bodied. Nice little pale.

VERY lively pour. Massive tan head, big malty aroma. Flavour has a lovely mix of sweet and toasty malt, some milk chocolate, a bit of dried fruit, a little smoke, a touch of something umami. Super drinkable.

Bottle split at Craft Beer Junction, thanks to Danny Boyo, 18/10/23. Hazed golden orange with a good sized off white cap that retains well. Nose is grass, herb, light funk, mellow citric zest, grains. Taste comprises Belgian yeast esters, light candied fruits, herb, hedgerow, spice, grass, stale biscuit, stewed fruits, light floral notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid Saison.
