Pilsener from lower Franconia, bottle from a shop near Cologne. Thick and frothy, beaten egg-like, moussey, pillowy head, clear deep and pure golden blonde robe. Aroma of white bread crust, dry hay, old cheese rind, mustard seed, light accents of white soap, minerals and young wormwood. Clean, neutral onset, fizzily carbonated but nowhere harsh; a clean, refreshing minerality edges a smooth pale maltiness, grainy and thinly white-bready, gradually bittered by rather peppery, leafy hops lingering for quite a long time after swallowing, effectively drying the finish and depositing a pleasant white-peppery spiciness blotting out the malts. Pure and well-balanced Pilsener, more in the northern tradition than the southern one.

Bavarian Pilsener from a brewery that has been active since the late 18th century; bottle bought at a drinks store somewhere in the Cologne region. Very moussey, foamy, cobweb-lacing, frothy, stable snow white head on a clear, yellow-golden blonde robe with strings of visible sparkling. Very 'beery' aroma of crushed grains, white bread crust, Graham crackers, dry straw, field flowers, minerals, flour, piece of chalk. Clean, neutral onset, pleasant minerality from medium strong, but certainly not harsh carbonation, announcing a slender white-bready and cereally middle, dryish with just a touch of malt sweetishness, but also a soft grainy sourishness; drying, somewhat rooty, grassy hops in the finish, 'noble' and pure, with restrained floral aroma. These hops provide a balancing, pleasant bitterness that, in the end, almost blots out that subdued malt sweetness. The balance is right here for a south German Pilsener, so I am a bit surprised by the generally low ratings below - this is an average and stereotypical, but certainly well made example of its style for me.
