Description
The first documented existence of a brewery on the location of today's Kneitinger at Arnulfsplatz was recorded more than 400 years ago. After many changes of ownership, in 1861 Johann Kneitinger I came into the possession of the brewery via marriage, together with the already existing Sommerkeller at Galgenberg. The skilled master brewer was the first to develop our strong Bockbier, with great success. After his death, his son Johann Kneitinger II refined the beer recipes even more. He also opened the restaurant at Arnulfsplatz, today known as the "mother house". Then, in the third generation, Johann Kneitinger III continued to manage the traditional company together with his wife Sofie. He died in 1975, and Sofie was his sole heir. While she was still living, she founded the "Hans und Sofie Kneitinger-Stiftung" in 1985. She died in 1991 and since then, the foundation has been the owner and operator of the Johann Kneitinger Brewery.

Bottle looks simple, premium-like. Beer in the glass very zippy, huge head. Starts mild, hoppy-dry, a bit soapy. Finish more balanced, less metallically. Spicy notes. Not too bad!

Clear glas bottle. Light beerylike notes on a light bready chewy malt body, good grass bitterhop finish, berries retronasal. Nice amber hue, golden lacing foam. I was positively surprised by this - thought it would be one of those anononymous partybeers, but it is actually quite solid.

4/VIII/2012 - on tap @ Brauerei Kneitinger (Regensburg) - BB: n/a - (2012-827)

Clear red brown beer, creamy beige head, unstable, nice lacing. Aroma: some caramel, hint of mocha, grains, stable, bit herbal. MF: soft carbon, light to medium body. Taste: pretty sweet, caramel, some citrus, overripe fruits, bit of banana. Aftertaste: overripe fruits, mocha, overripe banana, bit of coffee, bitter hops. Quite flavourful actually, but not my favourite flavours.

Clear golden yellow beer, creamy white head, very stable, adhesive, nice lacing. Aroma: grains, stable, hay, little herbal, some overripe fruits (banana). MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: some (carbon?) sour first, a little bit of grains, slight sweet touch, citrus. Aftertaste: some citrus, grains, hay, cow fodder, nice bitter dry ending. Very refreshing, I'll give 'm that, but maybe the high summer temperature in the city had something to do with it as well. ;-)

Had this on-tap at the source some years ago, lovely bar and beer garden: this review (Jan 2012) however is of a 500ml bottle which is out of date by 6 days. Poured into my ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard. I’ve seen lighter ’Schwarzbier’, this really is a dark brown coloured beer, a red tint shows when held to a light: the head was full and of tightly massed tan coloured bubbles. The nose is of malty, treacle molasses and plenty of them, nothing else could get through, so heavy was the molasses aroma. The taste is also majoring on malts and sweet ones at that. There are hints of liquorice once you get passed the massed ranks of maltiness, the liquorice also appears in the nose as the beer warms in the glass. The beer has a distinct bitterness towards the end of each sip, not sure if it’s hop based or from the dry liquorice feel. I can remember the Currywurst I had with the on-tap beers at the brewhouse, it complimented the beer very well: today I’m having good quality Salami with it, again goes well. A very nice beer indeed, well carbonated and easy to drink: especially if you prefer the sweeter type of brew like me.

Bottle from mein-biershop.de. Cola like brown color with small white head. Bread, yeast, caramel, prunes in aroma. Taste, toasted bread, caramel, honey, dark fruit, alcohol feeling in background. Alcoholic, burned sugar in finish. Little bit more on sweet side, as I like, but overall well balanced Dunkler bock.
