Description
The name “von Hövel” in Dortmund has stood for first-class brewing art for centuries. In 1518 the patrician family acquired the brewing rights on the Hövel-Hof am Hohen Wall, where Wilhelm von Hövel finally founded today's Hövels brewery in 1854. In search of the perfect beer, in 1893 he developed a mashing process with a particularly long ripening time. The result: a lean, but full-bodied beer specialty, rich in complex aromas.

Even today we feel committed to the tradition of always looking for the best, and thanks to our art of brewing, we impressively demonstrate this with new beer specialties, both in the Ruhr area and in the far north.

Bottle, courtesy of Koelschtrinker. Pours almost clear amber. Aroma is citric, lightly floral, but also quite malty. Body is light and refreshing, softly sweet and bitter, with a lively carbonation overtoning citric flavours. Malty but corny off sweetness. Medium palate, rather a bit too heavy for an otherwise light-ish beer. Okay.

0.3 l on tap at the brewpub. Slightly hazy, straw yellow with a medium large, foamy, stable, white head. Slightly sweetish, grassy-spicy and a little fruity aroma of straw, some grains and a touch of citrus. Slightly sweetish, moderately bitter, rather grassy-spicy and slightly fruity taste of lots of straw, grains, some bread and a touch of citrus, followed by a short, moderately bitter, grassy-spicy and minimally metallic finish. Medium-bodied, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Well done!

(bottle, 33cl) Clear, dark amber colour with a beige mid-sized foamy head. Sweet dark malty aroma with hints of caramel, sugar beet and shades of herbal hoppy spice. Sweet and delicately bitter flavour, medium bodied with a quite tame carbonation. Slightly syrupy malty taste with veggie notes of sugar beet and caramel; sweet and slightly sticky, restrained bitter finish. Wouldn´t have ordered a second one. 04.VI.17

(bottle, 33cl) Clear, amber colour with a medium-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Discreet aroma of mildly citric and grassy hops, draffy malt in the background. Moderately sweet and delicately bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Initially sweet malty base with hints of bread and a whiff of toffee, accompanied by rather cautious drying grassy and citric hops; medium-dry sweet-bitter finish with a mildly grassy touch. Disappointing. 25.IV.17

0.3 l on tap at the brewpub at 18°P and 7.8% abv. Minimally hazy, dark amber with a medium large, foamy, very dense, stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, minimally grassy-spicy aroma of caramel, dark honey and a touch of nuts. Sweetish-malty taste of caramel, dark honey and a touch of nuts, followed by a short, slightly bitter, moderately grassy-spicy finish. Medium to full body, creamy creamy and a bit effervescent mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Tasty, round and well-made brew, drinks way too easy for that abv. I wondered if Hövels and Wenkers Maibock were about the same but after immediate comparison I dare to say that both are quite different from each other.
