Description
The name “von Hövel” in Dortmund has stood for first-class brewing art for centuries. In 1518 the patrician family acquired the brewing rights on the Hövel-Hof am Hohen Wall, where Wilhelm von Hövel finally founded today's Hövels brewery in 1854. In search of the perfect beer, in 1893 he developed a mashing process with a particularly long ripening time. The result: a lean, but full-bodied beer specialty, rich in complex aromas.

Even today we feel committed to the tradition of always looking for the best, and thanks to our art of brewing, we impressively demonstrate this with new beer specialties, both in the Ruhr area and in the far north.

From the bottle. Tawny red color, clear, with a thin, frothy, beige head that lingers. Aroma is spiced caramel with grainy undertones. Taste has a weak grainy bitterness. The sweetness, such as it is, undertones of cardboard and berry jam. Does its thing and goes down otherwise inoffensively with a touch of cherry candy lingering at the finish. Medium body, a touch watery on the palate, ABV is well hidden. Not worth the attention I‘m giving it.

Draft at the Brauhaus in Dortmund. Orange with a frothy white head. Not much of an aroma. Mostly straw with yeasty undertones. Taste is mildly bitter, grainy, dry, with cotton and herbs. Medium body. Okay.

Thick creamy off white head stayed on a chestnut coloured still body. Berries, hops & faint malt aroma - smells like an English Bitter in the 1970's Medium to thin bodied, smooth & creamy over the palate with thin cloying back. Malt forward tastes with caramel, under ripe berries, hops & nice tangy finish. Tastes me back to 1979 - like a traditional English Bitter

26.07.2014, tap @ Lübke's Speicher, Lübeck:
Nice slightly bubbly mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly neutral, caramel malts, nuts, grass, hay, grain. Taste is slightly dry, hay, caramel malts, grass, nuts, hints of weeds and almond essence. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Boring.

On tap at the brewpub. Mild caramelly dry beginning. Moderate bitter hoppy, the caramel is quite dry with a bitter sweet finish. Nice balanced on the bitter sweet side. Nice with hints of dusty cellar yeast.

"Hövels Craftbock", laut Etikett ein „obergäriges Bockbier“, Flasche (33 cl). - Tiefes Kupferrot, klar.
