Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Tasting at Papsø, can
Hazy dark mahogany color. Mild aroma, some roasted malt and coffee (the coffee that you brewed yesterday). Slim mouthfeel, dry dark caramel, burnt sugar and coffee flavor; the final is not strong, but it just has burnt malts and ashes. Even if aroma and flavor are not too strong, they are clearly not what I like.

Can 50 cl. Courtesy of SecretSanta. Pours a clear reddish brown with a beige head. Distinct and very dry coffee accents in the nose - espresso style. Medium body, sweet roasted malt and vanilla again with distinct coffee notes. Dryish but not overly bitter finish. 230410

16oz can scored via trade. Pours a watery although opaque black with a thin, creamy, slightly cloudy beige head. The aroma is a nice mix of approachable coffee and sweet malts with a touch of nuttiness. Flavor is again well balanced between medium roast coffee and sweet malts. Tastes a bit like a cup of coffee with turbinado sugar. There’s a distinct brown sugar sweetness as well. Medium bodied, lightly sweet finish. There’s a bit of creaminess to the mouthfeel that combined with the sweet finish makes one thing of a good, not overly sweet, coffee ice cream.

Bottle, 75cl, from trade with Akevitt. A dark brown beer topped by a dark beige head. Vinous, berryish nose with cocoa and roasted malts. Very smooth, if one can use that word when talking aroma. Slightly roasted flavor, with berries and hints of cocoa, quite vinous, but not much alcohol warming. Full-bodied. Some berry-like sourness finishes the whole thing. A lovely beer! Smooth, vinous and slightly sourish, all very well balanced. 091113

16oz can scored via trade with tylerandso. Thanks Tyler! Pours a translucent, fairly clear orange, yellow with a thin, creamy white head. Aroma is very Belgian, Belgian yeast, spices like coriander, honey, flowers, sweet. Flavor is sweet, sugary, malty, honey, flowers, white pepper, coriander, pitted fruits. Finish is medium bodied with a sweet finish. Pretty nice, I find saisons are generally unfocused, but this was on point. Very drinkable.

The bottle looks great, the beer in the glass much better. Deep black, nice brown head. Starts intense malty, very sweet, notes of liquorice and strong coffee. Finish much drier, not as sweet as the beginning, also bitter notes. Still complex-malty, a little bit smoky. Very drinkable. A great beer!
